Edgar Cove Cabin Cruiser

Wooden Ships Comments on this Edgar Cove Cabin Cruiser

Classic cabin cruiser designed and built by Coves Boatyard in Salcombe for a local man in approximately 1972.

Designed for coastal and river exploration with a sheltered helm position and a small amount of accommodation forward with a couple of berths, heads and galley space.

More recently a canvas tent has been fitted that completely encloses the large aft cockpit making her a real all weather weekend boat.  Capable of coastal passages, her shallow draft also allows river and creek exploration.

Professionally maintained for her current long term owners, she underwent a major professional refit between 2000 and 20003 which included much refastening of the hull with some new steamed timbers, complete new varnished sheer strake, deck, wheelhouse and cockpit.  Since the refit she has been moored and used in Salcombe, wintered ashore in a barn every year and kept up to a very good standard.

Her Lister Petter engine was installed new in 2003 during the refit and has been professionally serviced and maintained ever since.

Philip 50 Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Philips 50 Motor Yacht

Philips 50 motor yacht designed and built for Sir George White Bt. by Philip and Sons Ltd of Dartmouth in 1963.  Built to Lloyds 100A1 classification.

White Mouse II was the second of 6 boats built to this design, some differing slightly in their construction methods and deck layouts.

Purchased by the current owner in 2009, she was returned to her home port of Dartmouth where she has been based ever since.  A series of significant refits have been undertaken, most recently by Silvers Marine in 2019/2020, along with more general and diligent annual maintenance by a team of skilled local tradespersons.  This yacht has been exceptionally well cared for during the last 12 years and is now a shining example of British naval architecture and boat building from her period.

With 6 berths in 3 cabins, including 2 large doubles, plus 2 extra singles in the wheelhouse, she has a very spacious and comfortable interior.  The current interior layout and joinery was fitted in the early 1990’s during a major refit by the previous owner and is a modern yet sympathetic upgrade from her original layout, much more suited to modern cruising and the way motor yachts are used today.

A very comfortable, elegant and sophisticated motor yacht in nice condition with a well documented history of maintenance and refit in recent years.

Condition surveys from 2017 and 2019 with full records of work done after those reports.

RNLB Barnett Class

Wooden Ships Comments on this RNLB Barnett Class

Ex RNLB Barnett Class, designed by James Barnett and built by Groves and Gutteridge of Cowes in 1956/57.

Sympathetically and carefully converted to provide comfortable accommodation making her a very capable, interesting and comfortable cruising motor yacht.

Serving with the RNLI from 1957 – 1986 in Weymouth and Galway Bay, she undertook nearly 400 service launches.  She then went on to work for a contractor for Trinity House, servicing navigation marks in the Bristol Channel, before being sold into private ownership for conversion.  She was rescued by the current owner lying on a beach in Lowestoft in 2002, no major alterations had been carried out and most of her original gear and equipment was still with the boat.  There started a steady and sympathetic conversion to create a practical and comfortable modern motor cruising yacht without losing the patina and history of her past.

The aft cockpit had been opened up giving a comfortable seating area, joined to the newly converted saloon aft of the wheelhouse with a fitted galley, heads and large double berth.  The wheelhouse remains largely original with her RNLI wheel and binnacle and access to the large engine room through a water tight door.  The forward cabin with separate access through the forehatch has been converted to a large twin berth cabin with separate heads compartment.

On deck she retains all her original features and fittings, including the huge Fishermans anchors used to secure the lifeboat and veer down on a wreck on the rocks, although these are not used they are kept on deck for originality

Her original Gardner 6LW engines are in superb condition and offer very economical cruising.

This is not just an old lifeboat, this is a comfortable cruising motor yacht with a rich history and pedigree, capable of going anywhere and a yacht that will open up a whole new world to her next owners.

Current undercover berth in Dartmouth available on long term basis subject to negotiation with owner of berthing facility.

Souters Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Souters Motor Yacht

Designed by W.A. Souter and Son Ltd, built by Clare Lallow Ltd of Cowes and fitted out by Port Hamble Ltd in 1968.

She has been in the present ownership for over 40 years, bought in 1978, and has been a superb family boat, lived aboard for several months a year and cruised around the south coast and northern Europe.

With a very generous beam and high freeboard this boat has a cavernous interior offering 8 berths and 2 heads plus lovely outside space for use in nice weather.

In 2015 the boat was re-engined at great expense with twin Yanmar 315hp diesels meaning she is now a super reliable boat with quite economic power.  The engines were fully serviced in October 2020.

She is a very original boat, her joinery is untouched since she left Port Hamble in 1968 and she has a comfortable and spacious feel to the interior.

A fine big boat, capable of 24 knots cruising speed, that will stand out from the crowd of plastic in the marina.

58′ Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this 58′ Motor Yacht

Built as a private yacht in 1968 on the lines of a traditional fishing boat, commissioned by Frederick Parks of Baston Deepsea Fisheries.  The hull and decks were built by the BIM Shipyard in Killybeg, County Donegap, she was then fitted out in Malahide with various cabins as seen today.

She has spent the last 20+ years working as a commercial dive charter vessel, offering residential diving holidays with comfortable accommodation with the ability to reach more inaccessible areas of coast and sea that smaller day boats access.

Although her commercial ticket has lapsed, she was coded to Category 2 for 10 passenegrs + 2 crew.  The fundamentals of this are still in place and her licence could be reinstated relatively easily if a new owner so wished. This would require some new life saving equipment and updated engine room fire system.  The fact she has been coded for the last 20 years means she has been regularly surveyed and kept up in good condition as required by the MCA.

With a total of 13 berths in 4 cabins, 3 heads compartments, large galley and comfortable deck saloon, she is an ideal platform for a commercial boat or a private expedition yacht for extended cruising in remote places.  Twin Volvo Penta diesels give reliable and economic propulsion, with 240v power from inverters or the 18kva generator.

A fine big motor yacht in seemingly good structural condition with the potential to fulfil a multitude of roles in the future

Silvers Brown Owl Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Silvers Brown Owl Motor Yacht

Built in 1935 by James A.  Silver of Rosneath to the John Bain Brown Owl design.

An all teak Silvers built motor yacht was the best money could buy at the time and John Bain is famous for his numerous designs of classic motor yachts.  The Brown Owl typifies Bains design philosophy to create boats with elegance, charm and class while still having very comfortable accommodation and deck space.

Her history is well documented from her time serving with the Royal Navy in Scapa Flow during World War II, through several owners eventually ending up in Belgium before being bought by the current owner in1996.  During their fastidious ownership, the current owners have maintained her to a very good standard, keeping faithful to the original John Bain concept and have cruised extensively around the south of England and northern France.  She has been an excellent, reliable and very comfortable cruising yacht on which the family have spent many long and happy periods.

Upon purchasing the boat the current owners started a 5 year professional refit in Lowestoft with a team of skilled shipwrights, during which time the decks, hood ends and garboards were re-fastened, the stem replaced with associated stem knees and 3 planks in the bows, a complete re-wire and overhaul of all the machinery and systems.

The design incorporates a central wheelhouse on a raised deck which vastly increases the interior volume allowing for much more space in the saloon.  This feature was a development and significant improvement on the first Brown Owl design.  Her accommodation offers 6 comfortable berths in 4 separate sleeping cabins plus 2 heads.

A true pedigree motor with elegant lines, used each summer in this long ownership but now needing a thorough refit.  Reduced dramatically in price due to the owners health situation and the need to sell the boat quickly before she deteriorates.

Converted Tug Boat

Wooden Ships Comments on this Converted Tug Boat

Built in Papendrecht, Holland in 1915 as a steam tug.  Converted some years ago and refurbished by the current professional shipwright owner for use on the European canals.  She has been an excellent cruising home for the couple who own her, providing comfortable accommodation on a very sturdy and capable vessel.

Her history has been well documented, built for a shipping company of the same name, Risico, she was one of 4 identical tugs towing oil barges around the canals and rivers of Holland.  She worked as a tug boat until 1974 in Dutch waters although her original steam engine was replaced with diesel in the late 1940’s when she changed hands.  She continued to work pulling general cargo barges until 1974 when she had her first light conversion and spent 10 years as a charter fishing vessel.  After this she went into private ownership and has been a cherished and well maintained private yacht ever since.

Her lay out is largely as it would have been in her working days although the interior fit out and joinery has been designed for comfortable live aboard cruising.

Perfect boat for the canals with her shallow draft but equally capable of coastal cruising.

Wooden Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Wooden Motor Yacht

Launched in 2014, she was built by a Dartmouth shipwright owner for his own use as a retirement hobby.

Inspiration for the design was taken from several places but the tight canoe stern and clinker planking are clearly a nod to the Scandinavian and Dutch boat builders so she very much has the look of a sturdy and capable coastal fishing boat.  That feeling has been echoed with the design of the wheelhouse giving her a purposeful yet very attractive look.  There is no doubt this boat will turn heads wherever she goes and look after her crew in comfort whatever the season.

Built with good materials, she has been well cared for by all her owners.  The engine, systems and structure of the boat are all in very fine condition and she is ready to go off exploring right away.

The interior layout is perfect for a couple offering a very large double berth up forward, full headroom throughout, comfortable saloon and separate heads compartment.  She would look perfect heading down the French canals or anchored in the Isles of Scilly.

2018 survey.  Berth included with the sale in Portland Marina paid up until April 2022.

MFV project

Wooden Ships Comments

MFV built by Herd and Mackenzie of Buckie in 1960 as a Seine netter.  Sold out of fishing and converted for charter work and sea angling.

More recently she came to Dartmouth and was sadly abandoned by her previous owners so she has been seized and is now the property of the harbour authority.  She is being sold as is on the condition that a new owner moves the vessel to another location.

She cannot move under her own steam as the main engine is seized.

The exact condition of the hull is unknown but there is clear evidence of structural decay and problems that will need to be addressed.

This is not a project for the faint hearted or inexperienced but if a large MFV is being sought she could be returned to fine fettle once again with a major rebuild.
