Swedish Lifeboat

Wooden Ships Comments

This boat has been in the same family for approximately 40 years, of which 30 stored ashore. “Gräsgård 325″ was built for the Swedish Maritime Administration in 1945 most likely in the harbour of Ystad on the southern coast of Sweden. Her active period in service was on the island of Öland in the small harbour of Gräsgård on the southeastern side of the island. It is said the present harbour was built to accomodate this boat! Rumour has it that the intended skipper lived nearby and as there was no harbour one had to be built. She was located there from 1945 until approximately 1972. She was thereafter sold to the father of the present owner. Sadly no documentation has been found but undoubtably many launches took place during this time.

Original equipment such as anchors, a spare rudder, binnacle, drogue and oars are still there. She is in very original condition and sound as far as can be seen, but the whole boat needs to be scraped down to bare wood.

This is in every sense of the word a rare find, a boat like this does not appear on the market very often. Definitely a boat for the collector who appreciates true quality in build and materials. Money was no object when this boat was built.

The boat is available for viewing on land in Smygehuk, which is the southernmost cape of Sweden and only forty minutes from Copenhagen International airport.

Nelson 40 Twin Screw Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Nelson 40 Twin Screw Motor yacht

Nelson 40 with a GRP hull and a wooden superstructure.

Hull built by Halmatic Ltd in 1975 with the deck and interior fitted by Latham and Sons to a very high standard.

A spacious yacht, she has a large amount of interior volume with a very nicely finished wheelhouse with great all round visibility, a lower and more private saloon which is still light and spacious, plus a raised aft deck with seating and table for those warmer days.  The large full width owners cabin has a separate heads and a dressing table.

Used by a previous owner as his regular transport from England to the Channel Islands, she is a comfortable and fast passage maker which will cruise at a respectable 16 knots and with the modern design of semi displacement hull she will not roll like motor yachts of a more dated design.

The bright work has recently had a spruce up with several coats of the respected Tonkinois, a durable and easily applied French product.

A well equipped, smart and well presented motor yacht which would make an excellent home afloat or a very comfortable summer cruising yacht.

Over the past century and over 3 generations this well-known family of Cornish boat builders has designed and built a wide variety of craft from fishing boats to 60’ yachts, all of which have been launched over the sea wall outside the yard in their unique fashion, all described in a rare and now collectable book, a Boat Builder’s Story.  Small cabin cruisers like this one were very popular with their immediately recognisable lines so typically Cornish – the straight stem, transom stern with that small but essential tumble-home and the sweet sheer – sea-worthy little ships developed from the local fishing boat design.

The large, deep, cock-pit gives ample space for the family or fishing party and at the same time giving week-end cruising accommodation for a couple.

Design.

Long straight keel, straight, raked stem and transom stern.

Transom-hung rudder.

Midships break in the deck and raised fore deck for more head-room in the 2 berth cabin forward.

Roof over the forward end of the large deep-cock-pit.

Wheel steering on cables to the transom-hung rudder.

Hull.

Carvel planked in yellow pine fastened to the closely spaced steam bent oak timbers with copper nails and roves in the usual way.

Heavy oak floors across the centre-line.

Full length iron ballast keel.

Legs fitted to allow the vessel to stand up on a drying mooring. Small bilge keels protect the hull from chafe if dried out on her bilge.

Some loose internal trimming ballast as iron and lead pigs.

The hull is painted white with the raised planking forward in varnished teak.

Straight-laid, solid teak fore deck, caulked and payed, scalloped down in way of the wheel shelter.

Cock-pit.  Large cock-pit about waist deep with heavy , varnished teak capped gunnel gives a tremendous sense and reality of security.

Loose pine boards in the cock-pit sole allow for easy access to the bilge.

Full length seats each side with cushions.

The engine is installed in the middle of the cock-pit, the box over providing a useful seat or table.

Small aft deck over a lazarette locker containing the fuel tank, tiller arm and associated cables to the teak wheel.

Helm position forward to port with a traditional teak wheel on cables to a tiller arm through the transom under the aft deck to the rudder stock – a simple and fool-proof steering method.

3 windows forward, the centre window opening + side windows for excellent protection from the weather.

Engine instrument display in front of the helm.

Centre doorway forward to the cabin.

Switch-board to stbd.

Engine.

BMC 4-cyl 1.5l naturally aspirated, fresh water cooled diesel engine installed in 1998.

Max speed                   8knts.

Cruising speed                        6knts.

Consumption.              Approx ½ gph

Fuel.                            Approx 30gall stainless steel fuel tank in the lazarette locker aft .

Electrics.                     2 x 12v batteries on 12v circuits.

A reconditioned gear-box was fitted in 2000.

The belt-driven salt water circulating pump recently refitted

The engine has been regularly professionally serviced.

Rig

The vessel carries a small Bermudian ketch rig on varnished pine masts, the main stepped on the fore deck, the mizzen stepped on the aft deck.

Stainless steel rigging to external bronze chain plates.

Roller reefing booms.

Mainsail, mizzen and jib.

The rig provides a useful motive power and the owner has had occasion to sail the boat home up the Helford River.

Accommodation

2 berths in the cabin forward.

Sea toilet in a separate compartment forward with door to the cabin.

Port and stbd settee berths.

Centre door in the main bulkhead to the cock-pit.

26′ Swedish ‘backdecker’

Wooden Ships Comments on this 26′ Swedish ‘backdecker’

A very interesting and extremely eye catching  yacht, built in Sweden in 1926 by Froberg Boatyard and designed by Dr Harald Kjerrulf.  Karl Froberg was known as one of the best boat builders in Sweden at this time and only ever completed 114 yachts.  Known as a ‘backdecker’ she was intended as a coastal cruising boat and offered cosy but comfortable accommodation with a large cockpit and enough speed to make reasonable passage times.  Originally she had a small auxiliary rig with twin masts but that has since been removed.

She has been extremely well looked after and had a major refit in the late 1990’s in Holland by a large professional yard.  The engine has been regularly maintained and in 2015 she made a long inland water trip of over 120 running hours with no problems at all.  The hull construction is still totally original with no epoxy or sheathing.

26′ Swedish ‘backdecker’

A stunning boat offering great flexibility in her use with a detailed history and  full documentation.  Ready for use this coming season and as good as she looks.

Morgan Giles Teak Launch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Morgan Giles teak launch

This Morgan Giles designed teak launch was probably originally built as a gentleman’s  launch  and she has an interesting history.  She is reputed to have been used as a port supply vessel in Falmouth during World War 2, and was then bought by the Thompson family in the Scilly Isles and used as an inter-island passenger ferry for 50 odd years until 2005.

Twin Engine Motor Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Twin engine motor yacht

Price                     £7,500

Lying                     River Medway

Built by Stebbings of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1947 to a design by J.H. Hardman.  Six were built in total and all are afloat today and in commission.

The design offers a lot within her length including a lovely aft cockpit accessed from the main aft cabin.

She has had a large amount of professional work carried out in the present ownership including structural work to the hull and decks however she needs attention to the interior in order to complete the project.  She has a current Boat Safety Certificate.

The boat is currently laid up afloat on the River Medway under covers with heaters aboard to keep out the damp.  She is a project and will require a thorough cosmetic refit and attention to the interior joinery, however she is a complete boat and capable of being steamed away under her own power.  She would make an ideal boat for use on the Thames or for coastal cruising.

Length Overall                   33′

Beam                                   10′

Draft                                    3’6″

Construction

Planked in two layers of mahogany, diagonally laid on the inside and horizontally planked externally.  All copper fastened through on closely spaced steamed timbers.

Mahogany coamings with sheathed plywood coachroof deck and wheel house roof.  Hand rails on the wheel house roof and coach roof.

Straight laid teak foredeck and side decks on a marine plywood sub deck with varnished cover boards.  Stainless steel hand rail around the foredeck for safety.

Machinery

Twin Ford Parsons D80 4 cylinder diesels, the same engines fitted to the Fordson Major tractor.  In good working condition and run regularly.

Capable of cruising very easily at 8 knots.
