Wooden Ships Comments on this Scottish Motor Fishing Vessel
Built by W. & G. Stephen of Banff, Scotland in 1915. She was launched as a Seine Netter with lug rig and auxiliary motor. Quickly converted to a straight motor fishing vessel, she worked out of Montrose, before moving to Dundee, Arbroath and finally Kirkaldy where she was registered in the 1940’s with the number KY143.
Sold into private ownership in 1968, she moved to the south coast and was bought by the present owner in 1982. After that started an extensive and detailed rebuild which has been ongoing since 1982, with effective completion of the refit this year.
Approximately 90% of the hull has been replaced; all the frames and all planks above the waterline are new. The keel was kept along with some underwater planking. The whole deck structure, superstructure and all systems are also new.
This long refit has been a labour of love and passion for the owner, less about getting to sea and more about rebuilding the boat to the best standard possible and enjoying the refit process. With this accomplished it is now time to hand her over to a new custodian. The interior of the hull is empty and could be fitted out as a new owner desires, or left simple and open. With an impeccable and virtually brand new hull, all new systems and a superb rebuilt Gardner diesel engine she is in great shape for a new owner to carry on and enjoy the boat in the years to come.

Construction
Hull
All new hull planking above the waterline and approximately 90% new below.
Iroko planking fastened with 10mm x 100mm galvanised coach screws. Older planking refastened as necessary.
Frames are sawn iroko futtocks fastened through with 316 stainless steel bolts. All framing throughout the hull is new.
Stem and stern post replaced.
The existing wood keel had been replaced in the 1940’s and was in good shape, fastened through with bronze bolts, so this was left in place. A heavy steel U-section keel shoe was added.
New bilge stringers of 7” x 3” in iroko fitted with stainless steel bolts.
Internal trimming ballast.
Three watertight bulkheads fitted to the hull made from plywood bulkheads with watertight doors in the forward bulkheads. This separates the hull into 4 separate compartments all with dedicated bilge pumping systems.
Stern post hung rudder, newly built in iroko with bronze hangings. Cable steering to the wheel with emergency tiller option.
Decks and Cockpit
All new deck structure fitted.
Heavy 10” x 3” iroko beamshelf with large section iroko deck beams and carlins.
Composite deck of marine plywood screwed to the deck beams, overlaid with straight laid iroko deck planking bonded to the ply with payed seams. The iroko deck has been painted with a non-slip coating.
Bulwarks all round mounted on stanchions that are supported by metal brackets rather than through the covering board, reducing the risk of fresh water ingress.
Galvanised stanchions and railings all round at waist height.
Superstructure
Low coachroof over the midships area with a wheelhouse aft.
Coachroof and wheelhouse constructed with a 3” x 3” iroko frame and iroko external planking. Toughened glass windows in the wheelhouse.
Coachroof deck of similar construction to the main deck of painted iroko over a marine plywood subdeck.
Machinery
Engine
Gardner 6Lw 84hp diesel completely rebuilt in 2011. Only 86 hours running time since rebuild.
New heat exchangers and oil coolers fitted along with a wet exhaust system.
PRM 750 gearbox to a centreline fixed 3 blade 29” bronze propeller. Modern Lasdrop dripless stern gland.
Cruising speed of 7 knots at 1000rpm, using a maximum of 5 litres/hour which is very economical cruising.
Tanks
2 x 400 litre stainless steel fuel tanks in the engine room.
Racor 500MA fuel filter plus emergency remote fuel shut off valves.
Batteries and Electrics
3 x 12volt battery banks for engine start, windlass and domestic/navigation systems.
Charged from the Delco 105 amp alternator or through the Victron charger when connected to shore power.
Installed shore power system with all necessary protections.
All wiring and systems are new.
Accommodation
The interior of the boat is basically empty and could be fitted out to a new owners specification.
There are 3 watertight bulkheads installed to split up the interior space and separate the engine room from the living accommodation.
In the forepeak is a Jabsco manual sea toilet with direct discharge.
Good standing headroom throughout the midships under the coachroof.
