Wooden Ships Comments on this Souters Motor Yacht

Designed by W.A. Souter and Son Ltd, built by Clare Lallow Ltd of Cowes and fitted out by Port Hamble Ltd in 1968.

She has been in the present ownership for over 40 years, bought in 1978, and has been a superb family boat, lived aboard for several months a year and cruised around the south coast and northern Europe.

With a very generous beam and high freeboard this boat has a cavernous interior offering 8 berths and 2 heads plus lovely outside space for use in nice weather.

In 2015 the boat was re-engined at great expense with twin Yanmar 315hp diesels meaning she is now a super reliable boat with quite economic power.  The engines were fully serviced in October 2020.

She is a very original boat, her joinery is untouched since she left Port Hamble in 1968 and she has a comfortable and spacious feel to the interior.

A fine big boat, capable of 24 knots cruising speed, that will stand out from the crowd of plastic in the marina.

Construction

Cold moulded diagonal Honduras mahogany, likely to be glued with resorcinol glue.

Sheathed externally from new with Cascover.  Mahogany chine rails and spray rails screwed and glued over the Cascover.

Lattice of longitudinal and athwartship plywood members in the bilge, bonded together in the corners with glass fibre tape.  This forms a very strong and rigid framework in the bilge providing stiffness for the hull as well as being strong mounts for the engines.

Marine plywood decks, sheathed in Glass fibre externally and finished in non-slip deck paint.  Aft deck over aft cabin and cockpit sole in straight laid teak over plywood.

Coachroof coamings made from mahogany.  Alloy framed windows with reinforced glass in the coamings and wheelhouse.

Self draining aft cockpit with doors from the aft cabin.  Teak laid sole and varnished mahogany thwarts that have large lockers under.

Machinery

Twin Yanmar 315hp 6LPA-STP2 6cyl turbo charged marine diesels, installed new in 2015.  These are 4.1 litre 24 valve engines based on a Toyota engine.

4 fuel tanks with link pipes.  Aft tank under the aft deck is a 100 gallon plywood tank bonded into the hull and sheathed internally.  This recently had a stainless inspection hatch installed and was totally cleaned and checked.  Engine room has a new plastic tank to starboard and an original sheathed plywood tank to port plus a Stainless tank forward.

2 x 120ah AGM domestic batteries and 2 x 110ah lead acid engine start batteries.  Both these banks are linked to provide 24 volt.  Charged from engine alternators.  C-tek 240 volt charger for use when on shore power.
