Wooden Ships Comments on this 52′ Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter

Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter built by E. Rowles of Pill in 1905.  She was built for Capt. Gilmore Dickens and named after his wife Letitia (Letty).

Major professional rebuild between 2011 – 2019.  All hull planking, frames and the majority of the centreline structure were replaced along with a new deck, interior, machinery, systems and rig.

Sadly offered for sale at a very attractive and low price due to the owners health issues.  This asking price is far below her current market value and this is a golden opportunity for the right person to obtain an original yet rebuilt Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter that is largely ready to go this season.

All the advertising photos are recent and are representative of her current condition.

The first part of Lettys rebuild was started at Cockwells yard in Falmouth where the centreline, hull planking and frames were replaced.  She was then taken to Plymouth and the work was completed by experienced shipwright Chris Rees with a new deck interior systems and rig.

Since the completion of the work in 2019, she has sailed extensively, taking part in the 2022 Brest and Douarnenez festivals and joining the OGA Round Britain event in 2023.

The boat is currently laid up afloat but will need very little spring work before being ready for the season.

Construction

Hull

Carvel planked in larch fastened with galvanised boat nails to sawn oak frames.

Oak centreline structure virtually all new apart from small areas of deadwood.

No external ballast keel as is common on pilot cutters.  Internal ballast of concrete puddled into the bilges.  Trimming ballast of lead pigs secured on top of the concrete.

Decks and Cockpit

Straight laid douglas fir deck glued over a subdeck.  Marine plywood subdeck routed on the underside to give the appearance of deck seams.  Sheathed on top with epoxy glass cloth for a totally watertight deck.  The douglas fir planking is bonded to the subdeck with epoxy to avoid the use of mechanical fastenings penetrating the sheathing.  Seams are payed with Sikaflex.

Oak covering boards with stanchion mounted through.  Small bulwark with a mahogany capping rail.

Larger cockpit than the traditional pilot cutter style giving space for 4 adults to sit in comfort while underway

Self draining cockpit well with a teak grating.  Iroko coamings around the cockpit.

Tiller steering with autopilot.

Superstructure

Teak butterfly skylight over the main saloon.  Iroko forehatch.

Main companion hatch is in the traditional pilot cutter style, built from iroko with double doors and a sliding hatch giving easy access below decks.

Rig

Gaff cutter rig on a solid douglas fir mast.

Douglas fir boom, gaff yard, fidded topmast and bowsprit.

Appledore roller reefing system on the boom.

Standing and Running Rigging

Galvanised wire standing rigging all new in 2019 by traditional rigger John Albrecht.

Parcelled and served in the traditional manner.

Galvanised rigging screws to external galvanised chain plates.

Running rigging uses modern ropes in a sympathetic way to improve handling of the rig.

Jib sets on a Wykeham Martin furling system with a traveller to the end of the bowsprit.

Sails

Sails all new from James Lawrence Sail Makers in 2020.  Mainsail, topsail, staysail, jib and flying jib.

Winches

Pair of Lewmar 52 non-self tailing winches mounted on the mast to take the halyard falls.  These winches are black to blend in with the mast iron work and are a huge benefit for handling the rig.

Bronze Lewmar 43 non-self tailing primary cockpit sheet winches.

Bronze Lewmar 42 non-self tailing secondary cockpit sheet winches.

Machinery

Engine

Nanni Diesel N4 115 installed in 2020.  This 115hp turbo charged engine was bought new in 2010 but not used until 2020 when it was eventually installed in the boat.

400 litre Vetus plastic fuel tank under the cockpit sole.

250 litre Vetus plastic water tank.

50W solar panel with Victron regulator.

Domestic Systems

Calorifier tank of approximately 30 litres connected to the engine for domestic hot water.  240 volt immersion coil for alternative heating when on shore power.

Reflex 60/61M diesel cabin heater.

General Description

The interior is completely new, built by experienced shipwright Graham Butler.  The layout and design is simple making good use of the space with elegant yet unpretentious joinery.  Being a larger pilot cutter the headroom is very good and her beam allows for a large and comfortable saloon.

Steps down from the companionway with a double quarter berth either side.  These are almost private quarter cabins.

Chart desk to port by the quarter berth, faces forward with a comfortable seat.

Moving forward the galley is located to port and mains heads compartment to starboard.

The saloon is separated off by the return of the galley with vertical grab rails for support.

Port and starboard saloon settee berths with a large pilot berth to starboard.  Dropleaf oak saloon table with elegant iron work for the legs.

Reflex cabin heater against the aft bulkhead of the saloon.

Large storage space behind and beneath the settee berths.

Starboard side door going forward into the forecabin. Large cabin with a single berth to starboard and excellent sized double berth to port.  Forehatch above offset to port.

Door into the forepeak with a second heads and storage space for warps, fenders etc.

Galley

Large U-shaped galley with a Nelson Tecma 2 burner stove + oven and grill.  Large top loading 12 volt fridge compartment set into the worktop.  Ceramic sink with hot and cold pressurised water.

Good storage space around the galley in lockers and shelves.

Heads

Electric sea toilet discharges through a stainless steel waste tank.  Hand basin with hot and cold water.

The heads compartment is watertight with a fibreglass tray and teak grating so it can be used as a wet room shower.  Tray drains into a sump tank under the floor that is automatically pumped overboard.

Second heads forward is a manual sea toilet that discharges directly overboard.  Hand basin with hot and cold water.
