Wooden Ships Comments

Built by Louw & Halverson, Cape Town, S Africa in 1961 to a design by Kurt A.H. Oehlmann of Lubeck, Germany.

Oehlmann is a well-known name in European yachting circles, responsible for some fine yachts and several super-yachts.

The yacht has had only three owners from new. The first owner, Col. Stanley Jeffrey stipulated a design capable of withstanding the rigours of the Southern Ocean and to be capable of 9knts under sail and power.  In many thousands of miles of world cruising she has proved herself to be capable of both.  She left Cape Town in April 1964 for the Med via St Helena, Ascension Island, Cape Verdes, Canaries and Gibraltar.  She took 35 days at sea to sail 5850 miles averaging 7 knts, 167 miles per day.

Her power and weight make her comfortable in heavier sea conditions and she is exceptionally fast off the wind with a sizeable sail area and the hull form to carry that power.  Off the wind in F 4 – 5 she will comfortably make 8 – 9knts

It is highly unusual to find a wooden yacht of this size with 4 proper sleeping cabins, plus she has a large deck area making her comfortable and safe to work on.

At present the boat is in need of a significant refit, there are extensive areas of soft in the plywood subdeck and the superstructure which will probably require a new deck to do the job probably.  She does however have a very good hull, a virtually brand new rig and spars and a great main engine.

Sudden illness has forced the present owner to pass the boat on after only a short ownership, any offers are invited for this fine big and very capable yacht.

Diagonal bronze straps from keel to gunnel stretch the length of the boat in the inside of the hull

Mixture of sawn oak floors and galvanised strap floors across the centreline.

External lead ballast keel of 11 tons with numerous 1″ stainless steel keel bolts.

25mm teak deck screwed and glued to a plywood subdeck and coated externally in Coelan.
