Wooden ships comments on this Bermudan Sloop

Designed by Rodney Warrington-Smythe and built by his Falmouth Boat Construction Co, Flushing, Falmouth Cornwall in 1965. Warrington-Smythe designed many yachts, the best known probably his Falmouth Pilot 5 tonners and 9 tonners.

Bermudan Sloop

The yacht was designed for a client who cancelled the order prior to build. The yacht was then built for Dick Watson a director of Falmouth Boat Construction Co. and subsequently passed to his daughter.

She was designed as a slightly smaller version of Jedanor, a successful 30’ racer and the present owners have proved her to be a fast yacht.

She will happily reach 6knts to windward and has logged 6.5knts in 12knts of wind. Off wind she will sail comfortably at 7.5 knots in 15 knots plus apparent wind.

The first reef goes in at 21knts, the second reef at 25knts.

She gives a very comfortable motion even in a sea, stands up well to her canvas and is a very well-behaved yacht. The cock-pit is a good size and the cabin can accommodate 2 in comfort and two children.

The boat feels like a much bigger boat when sailing and performs really well.

The yacht comes with copies of her original drawings and all bills back to 1998 to document her history.

Since purchase by present owners, considerable money and effort has been spent on updating the yacht. The fore peak has been rebuilt with a new sea toilet, the yacht has been rewired, the hull was stripped to bare wood and repainted with 2 undercoat and 2 topcoat.

Farrane is currently undergoing a refit ready for the 2016 season:

  • Stripped, repainted and re-varnished interior saloon and forecabin
  • Teak decking stripped and treated with Semco
  • Hull will be freshly painted with 2 costs of International and all exterior varnish work is being rubbed down and recoated with International Original varnish.
  • The wooden boom has been removed from the boat stripped to bare and revarnished – 6 coats
  • 2 new 12v batteries and new wiring
  • New engine starter motor
  • New automatic bilge pump
  • Re-caulking to forefoot and below waterline seams
  • New interior saloon and forepeak cushions
  • Genoa new in 2014 and used 4 times since
    • 2 spare genoas in good condition
  • Lots of new running rigging
  • New Harken furling system new in 2014 – little use since
  • Freshly anti-fouled and ready to go

She is presented in immaculate and sparkling condition following her refit and is ready to sail in all respects.
