Wooden Ships Comments on this Dee 25
Dee 25 designed by Peter Brett and built by Allansons Ltd in 1968.
Peter Brett is best known nowadays as the designer of the famous Rival range of yachts, the first of which were largely inspired by the Dee 25s. One of his early successes was the Dee 25 Class which subsequently evolved into the Rival 31.
He designed the first boat, Fair Rover for himself, the design was featured in Yachting World magazine in 1951 and she proved very successful in his local Irish Seas races. 10 more Dee 25s followed. No 2 Rondinella is a name many people will know, winning the Cowes Dinard Race in 1959 and the only boat in Class 111 to finish the 1965 Channel Race – see Adlard Coles Heavy Weather Sailing.
All the Dee 25s were built by Allansons of Freckleton on the Lancashire coast and the class that followed was named after the River Dee at Freckleton.
The design had some interesting features. The Dee 25 has not excessive draft with a long keel for good stability limited over-hangs and a generous beam for the period. It is said that the drying mud berth mooring near where he lived on the Dee Estuary was an influential factor in the design.
The interior rigid ply bulkheads are an integral part of the design and contribute to her strength. She stands up well to her rig and is remarkably fast.
This boat is only the third ownership and has been part of the same family for a long time. She has mainly been cruised around the UK and has been well cared for. 2015 survey available.

Planked in Pitch Pine all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.
Massive grown oak floors across the centreline.
External Iron ballast keel with galvanised steel keel bolts replaced new in 1997.
Yacht laid teak deck over a marine plywood sub deck. The teak is worn in places but the deck remains water tight and structurally sound.
Plywood coachroof coamings and coachroof deck with varnished teak hand rails and sliding hatch.
Self draining cockpit with varnished teak coamings with non-slip finish on the sole.
Masthead bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped Kemp alloy mast with an alloy slab reefing boom. Mast and boom were replaced new in 1991.
Stainless steel standing rigging new in 1991, to internal stainless steel chain plates. Twin lowers and a single cap shroud with twin standing back stays. Rota-stay roller furling on the forestay.
Single pair of non self tailing sheet winches in the cockpit coamings.
3 single halyard and reefing winches mounted on the coachroof to take the falls by the mast.
Full suite of sails including 2 genoas, spinnaker and storm sails.
Volvo Penta 2003 28hp twin cylinder diesel installed new on 1984.
Single lever controls to a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.
25 litre stainless fuel tank in the cockpit locker
2 x 12 volt batteries charged from the engine alternator
1 manual and 1 electric bilge pump
Spacious and well laid out accommodation for a boat of her size with good headroom.
Single quarter berth, 2 saloon settee berths which convert to a very large double plus 2 pipe cot berths forward.
Steps down from the cockpit over the engine box with galley to port and chart desk/quarter berth to starboard.
Galley has a Parker 2 burner gimballed gas stove with oven, top loading cool box and a manual fresh water pump. The sink is located in the bridge deck with a wooden board to cover it.
Chart desk drops down to form the forward end of the quarter berth, creating a full length and very wide berth. Nav instruments and book storage above.
Keyhole plywood bulkhead into the saloon with a settee berth either side and a dropleaf centreline mahogany table. The cushions go in to create a partial double berth across the full width of the saloon. All new upholstery 2016.
Diesel fired cabin heater at the forward end of the saloon.
Centreline passageway going forward with a Blakes Lavac sea toilet on the starboard side and a pull out hand basin above it with manually pumped fresh water.
The forepeak has 2 single pipe cots and storage for sails, anchor chain and fenders.
There is currently no pump or water supply to the sink in the heads.
