Wooden Ships Comments on this Gaff Cutter

This boat is a smaller version of a Breton sailing boat and was professionally built by boatbuilder Ed Matthews in 1964/65 at Ferris and Blank yard, Old Mill Creek, Dartmouth.  She was the last boat to be built in the yard.

A capable sea boat and able to be sailed single-handed from the cockpit.   Much work has been carried out by the present owners since 2009 and a list of this is available.

Carvel mahogany planking on oak and rock elm frames.  Copper fastened.  Full keel with transom hung rudder.  Bolt-on legs for drying berth.

Painted plywood deck.   Mahogany cockpit coamings and coachroof,  painted ply top.

Mainsail, heavy tan duradon, serviceable.

Jib, staysail and topsail, heavy tan duradon, good condition.

White genoa, unused by present owners.

Sheets 10mm pre-stressed 3 strand polyester, new 2010.



Braided polyester throat and peak halyards.  Topsail halyard 8mm 3 strand polyester.

Headsail halyards 12mm pre-stressed 3 strand polyester.

Lazy jacks, 6mm 3 strand polyester.   Shroud and backstay lanyards 3 strand polyester.

Blocks – varnished Ash except for Tufnell swivel blocks on mainsheet.

Mast, boom, gaff, bowsprit and topsail spar all varnished timber with galvanised fittings.





Volvo Penta MD1b, fitted as reconditioned unit in 2014.  100 hrs use since.
