Wooden Ships Comments on this Gaff Sloop Day Boat

Built by HJ Phillips & Son of Rye in 1938 as a sailing tripper boat, understood to have been built for Folkestone and is thought to have been the last working sailing boat built by the yard.

She was sold to the Medway in 1946 where she was a member of the Benfleet Sailing club wth her then owner A.F. ‘Buck’ Taylor who extensively cruised the local waters.  At this time she had a small coachroof with a cabin.  After his death the family took her to the Norfolk Broads where she fell on hard times and was bought by a young shipwright in 1989.  Then commenced a major refit which was completed in 1993.

Major rebuild in 1993 with full documentation for that work.  Included a new stem, new sections of keel, new centreboard box, many new timbers and replacement of the sheer strake with all new deck structure.  The gaff sloop rig was designed and made at that time to replace her original bermudan rig.

Professionally maintained in recent years and presented in nice condition.  With a suitable trailer the boat could easily be transported behind a suitable vehicle which could help reduce running costs and simplify ownership.  With her lifting centreboard and drop plate rudder, she has very shallow draft and can be kept on a drying mooring with no issues, again reducing the mooring costs and opening up more berthing options.
