Wooden Ships Comment on this Harrison Butler Bermudan Cutter
Dr Harrison Butler designed the ‘Rose of Arden’ class in the 1930’s, and this boat is one of four built and one of the three built at Mashford’s yard in Plymouth. In the previous 37 year ownership she made in excess of 10 transatlantic crossings and cruised extensively in the Caribbean, South America and the Mediterranean. She was always taken back to Mashfords Boatyard during his ownership for maintenance.

Construction
Pitch Pine planking on oak frames all copper fastened.
External 2 ton iron ballast keel with some internal trimming ballast. Keel bolts drawn 2 years ago and found in good condition.
T&G pine deck sheathed in epoxy cloth and painted.
Teak coamings and cockpit.
Refit this year included hull and decks repainted, brightwork re-varnished, garboard seams raked out and professionally re-caulked with oakum and red lead putty. Keel bolts tightened. New rudder heel support.
Rig
Bermudan cutter rig on a keel stepped solid varnished wooden mast.
Varnished wooden roller reefing boom and staysail boom
Galvanised standing rigging to internal chain plates.
Twin forestays, single standing backstay and running backstays on levers.
Tan sails with a total sail area 395 sq ft.
Professionally re-rigged this year.
Machinery
Volvo Penta MD 10a 2 cylinder petrol engine. Recent service with lots of spares.
Accommodation
The interior is rich with original paneled joinery and has a lovely cozy feel to it.
Steps down over the engine with a galley to port and chart desk to starboard.
Galley is a simple work surface with a 2 burner gas stove and two stainless sinks with manually pumped fresh water.
Chart desk is varnished teak with a drawer below.
2 saloon settee berths.
Centreline door into the forepeak
Forepeak is used for storage and has the original Baby Blake heads.

2 anchors and chain.
