Laurent Giles Vertue No.2 built by E.F. Elkins of Christchurch in 1937.
This was the second Vertue ever launched after Andrillot, built by the well known Elkins yard who became prolific builders of Vertue yachts.
These early examples of the Vertue differ to the later boats that were more common and only 8 examples were launched. They have a slightly lower freeboard, more exaggerated sheer line and a lower coachroof with no doghouse. They are widely regarded as prettier boats than the later sisters, but have less volume inside and only sitting headroom.
The sea keeping qualities of these yachts is legendary, perhaps the most accomplished small cruising design ever built, the Vertue is a superb boat at sea and in heavy weather where they will out perform many bigger boats and give their crew an incredible sense of security and safety.
Sally II is built from excellent materials, pitch pine planking, lead keel bronze keel bolts and bronze strap floors, all of which will ensure her longevity.
Recent mast from Noble Spars and a good suit of sails.
The current professional owner has had the boat for 30 years, cruising first from the Solent around Brittany, the West country and the Channel then on the west coast of Scotland for the last 20 years. A 2019 survey gave her a clean bill of health from a structural point of view.
A very special boat with lots of detailed history, original blue book, builders invoices and associated documentation. She has been on the Lloyds register since new.

Construction
Hull
Carvel planked in pitch pine all copper rivet fastened to sawn oak frames with intermediate steam bent oak timbers.
Steamed frames are 2” x 2” by 6” centres.
External lead ballast keel with bronze bolts. Bolts last inspected in 2019.
Tungum bronze strap floors across the centreline. Heavy grown oak floors in way of the mast step.
Decks and Cockpit
T&G laid pine decks sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and finished in non-slip deck paint.
Non-self draining cockpit with a bench seat either side and lockers below the thwarts.
Recent pramhood, given excellent protection and standing headroom under companionway hatch.
Tiller steering with a transom hung rudder.
Mahogany forehatch with a cover.
Superstructure
Sleek and elegant low coachroof which was a feature of the early Vertues. Mahogany coamings, varnished inside and painted externally.
T&G pine coachroof deck sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and finished in deck paint.
Hand rails either side with a mahogany sliding companion hatch.
Rig
Bermudan ‘slutter’ rig common to the Vertue. Can be sailed as a cutter or a sloop with a removeable inner forestay.
The Vertue rig is quite large giving the boat good performance especially in light winds, but it can be easily snugged down in heavier weather, the rig design giving various options for reducing sail. When reefed down these boats will sail comfortably in very strong winds that many modern boats would shy away from.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal galvanised chain plates.
Single standing backstay to the bumpkin.
Running backstays to 2nd spreaders on bronze Highfield levers.

Yanmar 1GM10 9hp diesel installed new in 2017. Less than 50 hours use.
Centreline fixed 3 blade propeller gives 5 knots cruising speed.

20 litre plastic fuel tank in port cockpit locker.

1 x 12 volt battery under the chart table, charged from the engine alternator.

Chart desk faces outboard with a locker beneath containing storage space and battery.

Pascal Atkey Pansey charcoal stove mounted on the mast.
Starboard side passage into the forepeak with a sea toilet to port and a single berth right in the bows on port side.
