Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Wanderer class

The Wanderer was Jack Laurent Giles’ 8 tonner, designed for Eric Hiscock to undertake his circumnavigation voyage.  Her lines were drawn with blue water cruising in mind and it is easy to see the similarities between this and the famous Vertue which had been such a success already.

This yacht was built for Captain David Guthrie  by Colne Marine, Essex in 1965, for the purpose of sailing across the Atlantic.  This he completed in 1965 from Madeira to Antigua in 26 days.  The following year he returned to Falmouth via Bermuda, a voyage of 3295Nm.  She was built to a high standard with strength and seaworthiness in mind.

Long keel design with a transom stern and transom hung rudder, slightly cut away forefoot to reduced the wetted surface area and gentle spoon bow.  Quite full in the bilge amidships to give stability and interior volume, with a fine run aft .

In the present ownership a refit has been started with brand new standing rigging all round, complete with the necessary certification, and a refitted sail wardrobe.  The engine has been proved as a reliable unit and although she looks cosmetically rough the hull appears to be sound.  Some elbow grease and hard graft will have her a long way to being sorted out.
