Wooden Ships Comments on this Lello 38 Staysail Schooner

Staysail schooner built by Dickinson Marine of Cape Town and launched in 1990, the lines are a Lello 38 from a designer called Brian Lello.   The first owner used the boat as a long distance cruising home and completed around 12,000Nm, eventually finishing his sailing career with her in the UK.  Bought by the present owner through Wooden Ships in 2003, she was sailed to the Baltic where she has been based ever since and from there has completed another 8,000Nm of successful cruising including a circumnavigation of Scandinavia through Russia and a crossing of the Barents Sea.

In her past she has sailed both north and south Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, northern Europe, the Baltic Sea and polar regions, proving herself to be an excellent long distance ocean cruising boat, very easily handled with comfortable space above and below decks.

The quality and strength of her build is second to none and a glance at the scantlings of her hull indicate a yacht built to take on the worlds oceans.  The majority of the hull is Afromosia which is a very durable and strong hard wood.  In recent years she has always been wintered inside where she is well protected and any necessary work can be carried out.

The decision to let go of a boat as good as this was not taken lightly and it is only because of changes in lifestyle that she is being sold, the owners are purchasing a larger vessel better suited for permanent live aboard in the cold Swedish climate.
