Wooden Ships Comments. on this McGruer Eight Meter Cruiser Racer

Designed and built by McGruers in 1959.

A fine example of the work from one of Scotland’s greatest yards. Classic McGruer Eight Meter Cruiser Racer lines with elegant counter stern and the tell tale McGruers doghouse.

Honduras mahogany hull, teak deck, varnished mahogany coach-roof, tiller steering in self draining cock-pit. New Volvo engine in 2008.

10 years present ownership. Major refit in 2006 with extensive new bottom planking, new bronze floors, stainless steel tanks and much more.

2019 survey revealed areas of soft in the sheerstrake that need attention, some minor delamination of the frame ends as well as a major overhaul of the varnish and paint work, therefore the price has been reduced substantially to take account of this work.  Full details of the work required available upon request.

Construction

Honduras mahogany planking phosphor bronze screw fastened to laminated mahogany frames.

Bronze strap floors

External lead ballast keel with bronze keel bolts.

Yacht-laid teak deck.

Varnished mahogany coamings.

 

 

 

Rig 

Fractional bermudan sloop on original keel-stepped alloy mast with, as was usual at this time a varnished roller reefing boom.

Stainless steel rigging to internal stainless chain plates

Roller furling headsail.

Self tailing winches.

 

 

 

Machinery

Volvo D-20B 18hp diesel fitted new in May 2008.

Centre-line 2-blade Maxi prop.

 

 

Accommodation

5 berths in very traditional lay-out for the period.

Fore peak sail stowage with fore hatch.

Forward cabin with port and stbd berths. Standing head-room under the fore end of the coach-roof.

Port heads compartment with Jabsco sea toilet.

Opposite, porcelain hand basin with H&C, shower head in the tap.

Saloon cabin with port and stbd settees. stowage behind and under.

Chart desk aft to port with quarter berth.

Standing head-room all through.

 

Galley aft to stbd with stainless steel sink, diesel fired cooker, microwave oven.

Pressurised H&C with hot water from a calorifier tank.

Steps up to the cock-pit.

Sliding hatch and wash-boards.

Teak laid cock-pit seats and sole.
