Wooden Ships Comments on this Kim Holman Landfall Class Ketch
Kim Holman Landfall ketch built by Whisstocks Boatyard Ltd, Suffolk, UK in 1958.
She was the first yacht of 6 built to this Kim Holman design and gave her name to the class. Built for Claude Whisstock, the owner of the boat yard, she was therefore the ‘boss’s boat’ and would have been built with a little extra care and attention. Owned by Whisstock for 25 years, she then had another long ownership before being given a major refit between 1998 and 2004.
Bought by the previous owners in 2006 and sailed to Devon where she was modified and prepared for long distance cruising and live aboard sailing. After cruising the West country in 2007, the then owners departed in 2008 for a 15 year cruise, arriving back in the UK in 2023. Their cruise took them south to the Cape Verdes, across the Atlantic to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina before travelling north through the western Caribbean, into Cuba, USA and Canada before heading home via the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Azores. The voyage covered 29,000Nm with over 400 anchorages and moorings.
The boat has behaved impeccably throughout that period and has never gave any cause for concern. She was a comfortable and safe cruising home, easily handled by her 2 crew in all conditions and much admired wherever she went.
Sold in February 2024 to the current owner, refit work weas carried out to remedy issues highlighted in the 2023 survey and the boat sailed to her new home in Dorset. Unexpectedly back on the market after only one season due to personal circumstances of the owner, this is a great opportunity for someone to acquire a spacious, capable and comfortable cruising yacht with great pedigree and provenance.
Full survey report available from November 2023 along with a list of actions taken since to satisfy the insurance company.
The owner of this fine vessel conceived an idea of building a new gaff cutter based on the Lowestoft sailing trawlers.
Mylne Classic Yacht Design were engaged to produce the design and they took inspiration from the smaller of the Lowestoft sailing drifters.
The hull was built by Stal Komplex, Gdynia, Poland. The hull completed the RCD assessment and is CE approved to Category C for 15 persons.
Launched in 2017.
The interior fit out has been completed by the owner and since her launch she has been cruised around the Baltic and up to Norway.
A very strong and capable boat with a professionally built hull and excellent rig. The interior is comfortable and in use, but could be altered to suit a new owner and a new vessel purpose if desired.
Designed and built by Gann and Palmer of Teignmouth in 1912.
She has an interesting underwater shape with a pronounced rocker to the keel, an unusual design for the time when most boats had a deep forefoot and a long straight keel. Her design may have been inspired by the Falmouth Quay Punts or other similar West Country work boats of the period.
Subject of a major restoration between 2007 and 2013 in previous ownership which included major hull repairs, new deck, coachroof and cockpit, new rigging and sails plus a complete new interior.
Bought by the current owner in 2018, the boat was adapted for short handed long distance sailing and sailed back and forth to Portugal twice where the owner lived aboard full time. Returning to the UK in 2023.
She has been proven as a very capable sea boat with good sail characteristics, safe in bad weather and very strong. The major rebuild was extensive and has put the boat in good stead for many years to come.
Full photo documentation of the rebuild and 2018 survey available on request.
Detailed article on the boat and owner in April 2023 Classic boat magazine. Huge history file with the boat including information on all owners back to her launch.
The hull was built by boat builder Charles McElroy in Ardboe, N. Ireland and launched in 1991.
The uncompleted hull was purchased by local man Aiden Riley, a lifeboat mechanic, who completed the build with the help of cabinet maker Vincent Murphy.
Plans for the completed boat were drawn up by naval architects Barr & Associates with stability analysis by Strathclyde Maritime Design.
She is largely based on traditional fishing boat lines, however her fore and aft sections are finer giving her a good grip in the water and better sailing performance than a round bilge fishing boat.
The RNLI connection is evident throughout from the aluminium wheelhouse to numerous high-end fittings, attention to details and the general no nonsense finish.
Bought by the present owner in 2014, a thorough rolling refit commenced with upgrading of much of the equipment and systems. Most of the rig is new, all electronics, nav systems and a Beta 90hp engine fitted in 2022.
In recent years she has been used for cruising the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides, where she has proven herself as a very capable and comfortable sea-going boat, well known and much admired in many places. Her hull shape is most interesting with good grip in the water, giving her rather impressive sailing performance. Although a motor-sailer at heart, she has a big sail area and can stand up to her canvas. She will easily make 6/7 knots on a beam reach.
Often mistaken for a Fisher 37, she is superior in many ways to that design and is a very impressive yacht, superbly well equipped, and ready for any extended cruising. Her large wheelhouse gives excellent space and shelter. Dedicated sleeping areas in the forward and the aft cabins separates sleeping space from living space.
Wooden Ships Comments on this 28′ GRP Falmouth Working Boat Gaff Cutter
Built by Cygnus Marine, Cornwall in 1979. The design is that of a traditional Cornish working boat with straight stem, long keel and transom stern. Known as the Cygnus Gaffer 29.
She has a heavily laid up GRP hull built to Whitefish standards with wooden decks and coachroof, to the untrained eye she looks like a traditional wooden working boat with very pretty lines. Her exceptional ballast ratio gives her good stability and stiffness.
The original owner commissioned naval architect Percy Dalton to take the lines from a selected Falmouth working boat. The lines were drawn and Cygnus Marine built the hull, a yard with a reputation for building exceptional fishing vessels. The rig, designed by Dalton, deck and interior fit out were built by the first owner in conjunction with a local shipwright.
She stayed in the first ownership until 2010 when a thorough refit was undertaken with new spars, upgraded and altered rigging, new systems and electrics. The current owner bought her in 2020 and carried out another period of refit. The decks were re-caulked, a new Beta engine fitted, standing rigging replaced and the boat generally brough back into commission.
She has since been used on the south coast and found to be a very well-mannered yacht as her heritage dictates, solid and safe but still rather spritely. She picks up compliments everywhere she goes and has been a great pleasure to her owner.
Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Wanderer Sloop
Laurent Giles Wanderer Class built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard, Hong Kong, in 1965.
Cheoy Lee built many Laurent Giles designs, including the smaller yet very similar Vertue. They benefitted from access to tropical hardwoods so were all planked in teak as this boat is. Like many other boats, she was shipped back to the UK where the fit out was completed and has spent her life in UK waters.
The Wanderer, made famous by the Hiscocks and their voyaging exploits, is essentially a blown up Vertue that employs many of the same design features and proved to have similarly excellent sailing qualities to the smaller cousin. Although only 4’ longer on the deck than the Vertue, the Wanderer is an exponentially bigger boat all round with significantly more internal volume and headroom.
This boat has been upgraded with a recent new coachroof deck and a rebuilt mast. Although her interior would benefit from a cosmetic refit, she is very much in commission and being used regularly with cruises planned this summer.
Sensibly priced for an attractive pedigree cruising yacht.
West Channel One Design from the pen of F.C. Morgan Giles and built by Morgan Giles Ltd in 1948.
Bought by a previous owner in a dilapidated state, a major rebuild commenced in 2010 with the boat being launched in 2016 although not quite finished. She went into a shed where work continued until the refit came to a halt in 2020.
Below is a list of work done so far:
Hull rebuilt with 32 new frames and 4 new floors
New 24mm Bulkhead in way of the mast
New deck structure including deck beams and plywood
New coachroof including coamings and coachroof deck
New interior partially fitted, needs completion
Low hours Beta engine ready to install
New Collars mast with the boat, complete with mast fittings
She needs rigging and sails, systems, electrics and interior completion.
The hull is in superb condition and all the hard work has been done by the current owner. She is being offered at a low price to encourage a quick sale and to ensure the boat goes to the right person who is able to complete the works required.
Wooden Ships Comments on this Heard 28 Gaff Cutter
Heard 28 gaff cutter built by Gaffers and Luggers of Falmouth in 1989.
A heavy displacement long keeled traditional hull design from Percy Dalton, with lines inspired by the Falmouth working boats but built in GRP. The Heard range of gaffers have been very popular over the years with the 28’ hull finished in various designs of deck and interior layout.
This yacht has benefitted from several periods of refitting and upgrades giving her an excellent inventory of equipment to make her a competent and comfortable cruising boat. Autopilot, self tailing winches, bow thruster and boom gallows are all features to help make her an easily handled yacht whether single handing or with a crew.
The bowsprit can be reeved up very easily to reduce the overall length and therefore cost of mooring.
I nice example of this well respected design, fully equipped and very capable.
Designed by Alan Buchanan and built to Lloyds 100A1 by Harry King & Sons, Burnham in 1960.
She remained in Lloyds Class until 1983.
Bought by the current owner in 2010, she has been sailed extensively with trips around the UK and northern Europe. In 2020 she had a refit with new mast, sails and rigging and replacement Yanmar engine along with new shaft and propeller.
Her design is typical Buchanan and offers excellent headroom and interior space.
A well proven and capable yacht with a rich and well documented history. Recently refitted and ready for the season.
Offered at a very attractive price as the owners are moving abroad and need to find a new home for the boat.
Wooden Ships Comments on this McGruer 8 Meter Cruiser Racer
8 meter Cruiser Racer (8mCR) yacht designed and built by McGruer & Co. In 1963.
McGruers built 15 of these yachts, distinctive with their elegant lines and familiar raised dog house aft, which is iconic McGruer.
The 8mCR was developed after an amendment to the original 8 meter racing yacht rule, creating a fast and elegant yacht with comfortable accommodation for her crew, enabling the yacht to travel between regattas and house her crew in comfort. With their 8 meter pedigree these boats are exciting to sail and turn heads everywhere. The Clyde became a strong hold of the class with a large active fleet through until 1975.
This yacht is perhaps one of the most well known of the class, commissioned by Peter Odlum, a stalwart of Irish sailing but no stranger to Clyde racing or west coast cruising. She was his second McGruer designed 8mCR,. Built to Lloyds 100A1, in her first season she scored 17 wins from 25 starts and won the Lloyds Register Yacht Trophy. Peter Odlum continued to enjoy racing success and enjoyable cruising with INISMARA, before commissioning James McGruer to design the yawl, RINAMARA, launched in 1968.
With just her third owner, she was purchased in 1995 by her current custodian after an extended lay-up of some 10+ years in the sheds at McGruers. Lovingly re-commissioned, great care was taken to maintain the boats original specifications while sympathetically modernising some areas.
A very well presented yacht oozing pedigree and charm.
