Westmacott Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Westmacott Gaff Cutter

Designed by Alfred Westmacott and built by Woodnutts of Bembridge in 1932.

Westmacott is perhaps one of the lesser known UK yacht designers but no less successful, producing among other boats the X-OD yachts and Solent Sunbeam, both of which have raced in large numbers around the Solent for over a century.  This yacht is a larger sister to the X-OD in many ways and has proved her speed and reputation over the years with many regatta wins in and around the Solent.  She has had class wins in the Yarmouth Taittinger Regatta + an overall regatta win in 2013.  She has won Yogaff twice and has won the coveted Potters Ship Trophy with the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

With a major no expense spared refit in 2005, she has been in the present experienced ownership since 2008 and has been regularly upgraded and properly maintained to keep her in very tidy condition and racing every season.  Refit and upgrades in 2022 including all new running rigging and blocks.

For a yacht of her length, she has a very spacious and comfortable feel below decks offering 2 excellent berths and space for a heads up forward.  Although currently stripped of the heads, Taylors stove and water tank to reduce weight for racing, these could easily be reinstated to make her back into a successful cruising and weekend boat with a good turn of speed and shallow draft.  She has however made for an excellent classic regatta boat in recent years and gained herself an excellent reputation in and around the Solent.
