Wooden Ships comments on this Bantham Class sailing dinghy

Built by Devon boat builder Jim Little and launched in 2013.  The Bantham Class sailing dinghy originates in the Devon village of Bantham on the banks of the River Avon near Kingsbridge, a very pretty traditional sailing dinghy.

A small fleet was built by a local boat builder and still sail in the river but this was the first new boat to be built for more than 10 years.

Purchased by current owner March 2014.  The dinghy was completely renovated in 2017 with all varnish work sanded back and 3 coats of Epithane varnish applied to hull and spars.  The dinghy has always been kept in a barn over winter and is in remarkable condition.

Construction

Planked in Khaya mahogany and finished in varnish.

Steam bent green oak timbers copper nail and rove fastened.

Hood ends and garboards screwed and glued with epoxy glue.

Thwarts, side benches and after bench in Khaya mahogany.

Galvanised steel centre-plate on block and tackle.

The hull was finished in 2 coats of West Epoxy WRA 200 with 2 coats of single pack varnish inside and 2 coats of 2-pack varnish outside.

Lifting rudder on stainless steel hangings.

Brass rubbing strip along the keel.

5 coats of Coppercoat applied to hull and centre-plate by Retreat Boatyard, Topsham (2015) so ideal for estuary mooring.

Rig

Gunter rig on varnished Douglas fir mast stepped on the keel through the forward thwart. The gunter rig requires a relatively short mast so very easy to lift and step single handed standing in the boat.

Rigging

Stainless steel standing rigging – single shroud per side and fore stay all set up with lanyards.

Bronze mastband fitted 2015.

Mainsail sheets to a track on the top edge of the transom

Jib sheets through fairleads on the thwarts with adjacent jammer.
