Wooden Ships Comments on this Chris Craft Replica Barrelback 19 Runabout

Built by the owner to plans from American company Glen-L whos in-house designer, Ken Hankinson, adapted the original Chris Kraft 19’ Barrel Back Runabout for more modern construction.  The boat was completed in 2022.

The owner had been a furniture maker and wanted a new challenge in retirement so bought the plans and set about building his dream to the highest standards.  He completed the boat over a 6 year period, working part time for only 6 months every year while he was in the UK.

Her modern construction employing the use of epoxy resin makes her a rigid and strong hull that will stand up to use over time.  The finish is all 2 pack Jotun paints that do not degrade like varnish and can be easily repaired if needed.  This all makes for a low maintenance boat in the years ahead.

She comes complete with a custom built SBS road trailer, fitted with vertical poles at the aft end to aid recovery on the slipway, and a permanently fixed but retractable extension bar to launch her without getting the vehicle in the water.

The boat has been sea trialled and the mechanics tweaked to get everything running as smoothly as can be.  She is otherwise a brand new boat in immaculate condition.

This is a boat that stops people in their tracks, turns heads everywhere and is really quite a remarkable achievement.  Her comfortable interior with seating for 4 and integrated sound system makes her superb for sunny lazy days on the water.

The boat has its own web site with more detailed information:

Construction

  • Hull
  • Built on a frame of Douglas fir frames and stringers which formed the shape of the hull.
  • With this frame upside down, 2 layers of marine plywood were bonded over the top and the outside veneered in a 6mm layer of Sapele.  The bottom of the hull has 3 layers of plywood for added strength.
  • The whole hull is bonded using West System epoxy.
  • The underwater hull is finished in 2 layers of epoxy glass cloth.
  • This type of construction makes for a very rigid and strong hull that will not dry out and suffer from being kept ashore.
  • The deck has a sapele covering board with straight laid sapele deck planking interspersed with maple inlays creating the laid deck effect.  This gives a striking finish to the boat.

  • Interior
  • The interior is finished with maple panelling against the hull.
  • Joinery is trimmed with maple.
  • The interior sole is the opposite of the deck using maple planking inlaid with sapele strips which gives it a light and comfortable feel.
  • The upholstery is a smart royal blue with white piping.

  • Paint Finish
  • The boat is finished with Jotun Megagloss paints throughout.
  • The underwater hull has 2 layers of Jotun Megaprimer epoxy primer on the glass sheathing and then 6 coats of blue Jotun Megagloss topcoat.
  • The sapele hull was treated with 4 coats of clear epoxy then finished finished with 6 coats of clear Jotun super yacht paint.  This was then polished and buffed to create a mirror finish that can be easily repaired if needed and does not degrade like normal varnish does.
