Wooden Ships Comments

Built by the owner and based on a yacht tender owned by his family.  A mould was taken of the original boat and this dinghy was built over that mould.  Designed to be a lightweight, pretty yet practical tender, she can be sailed, rowed in the conventional way or sculled with long spoon blade oars and outriggers.  The hull is only 54kg so can easily be lifted onto the deck of a larger boat or indeed carried by hand.

Immaculately finished in 2 pack varnish, complete with the whole rig, 2 pairs of oars and a road trailer.  Would be ideal as a yacht tender or simply as a family dinghy as she is so easy to handle, providing fun for all the family be it rowing or sailing.

Construction

Built using 3 layers of 1.5mm Kaya mahogany, glued using West System epoxy.  Finished inside and out with 2 pack varnish.  Finished externally below the water line in white gloss.

Solid oak rubbing strake, stringers and thwart knees.  The knees are neatly laminated for strength.

Varnished Mahogany thwarts with scrubbed teak sole gratings.  Aft and centre thwart with drop in side thwarts between the two.  Forward thwart also supports the mast.

Varnished mahogany centreboard case with a laminated varnished mahogany centreboard on a slotted hinge

Carbon fibre foot rest, sliding seat and outriggers which convert her to a proper rowing skiff.

Conventional rowing positions with rowlocks mounted to the capping rail.

Rig

High aspect bermudan rig on an unstayed Carbon fibre mast.  The mast has been veneered in a 1.5mm layer of Ash to give the look of a varnished wooden mast.  Mast is sleeve jointed so it comes into two pieces making transport very easy.

Ash veneered carbon fibre boom.

Sail made with modern laminated material, with viewing window.
