Wooden Ships Comments on this Fabian Bush Cruising Dayboat

a perfect trailer sailer boat designed and built by Fabian Bush of Rowhedge, Essex.  The boat was commissioned by a client and was seen through to completion and sea trials, however a change in circumstances means the boat was never delivered to the commissioning owner and is being offered for sale.

The construction of the boat was completed in 2020 and she underwent sea trials in 2021.

The design has a very traditional feel  but incorporates modern boat building techniques to make a stiff and durable trailer sailer while also being low maintenance and easy to use.   she is a substantial boat with good freeboard, a stiff hull and plenty of space within.  All fittings and fixtures are of bronze or gun metal and the detail in the finish is exceptional.  The 2 pack polyurethane paint and varnish used is highly durable making for a low maintenance boat.

The boat has been licenced through the RCD system, classified for sheltered waters, estuary and coastal use in winds up to Force 6 as RCD Category C.

The boat is exceptionally well equipped with a purpose made road trailer, Torqeedo electric outboard, and various different covers.  She has been tried and tested so is now absolutely ready for her first owner to launch and go exploring.

This is a brand new boat in new condition.

Construction

Clinker planked in 9mm Sapele faced Bruynzeel Regina marine plywood allowing a varnish finish to the inside of the hull.

Sheer strake in a similar plywood but with a teak facing for a varnish finish.

Epoxy glued plank lands for a robust strong hull.

Hull below the waterline is sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and finished with Coppercoat antifoul paint.  The rest of the hull has been finished with 2 pack paint and varnish.

Sawn ash frames throughout the hull for added strength.

Iroko centreline with a teak faced marine plywood transom.  Transom mounted rudder on bronze hangings, teak rudder stock with a laminated drop down rudder blade.

Marine plywood centreboard case, sheathed internally with Kevlar against abrasion.  Laminated wooden centreplate with a lead counterweight,  raised with a tackle.

Laminated teak gunwhales with a maple inlay.

Foredeck of straight laid teak over a marine plywood subdeck with epoxy glass cloth inbetween, supported on spruce deck beams.

Varnished mahogany thwarts supported by oak knees.  The aft thwart doubles as a sealed buoyancy tank with mahogany laid over a marine plywood base.  Well in the aft thwart for the electric outboard.

Further buoyancy tanks under the foredeck and below the sole.

Rig

Gaff sloop rig on a keel stepped varnished hollow douglas fir mast, made using the birds beak construction method.  The mast can be stepped easily by one person.

Solid douglas fir boom, gaff yard and bowsprit.

7×7 stainless steel standing rigging with talurit eyes,  tensioned with lanyards to external bronze chain plates.

All running rigging is buff classic braid for a sympathetic look, buff cruising dyneema for halyards.  Tufnol blocks.

Sails in cream clipper Canvas from North Sea Sails comprising mainsail and jib.  Total sail area of 165sqft with 2 reefs in the mainsail.

Jib sets from the bowsprit to mast head with a wire luff and sheets back to the cockpit through Lignum Vitae bullseyes.  Mainsheet makes off to a track across the transom, with the tail coming along the boom into the middle of the cockpit for easy handling.

Machinery

Torqeedo Travel 1103Celectric outboard that has been adapted to fit the boat, drops through the well under the aft thwart.  The well has a removable plug.

The outboard has a remote battery located under the side thwart and a remote lever control.  The outboard stows neatly under the thwart when not in use.  This is a very light and easy to use set up that has been well designed and thought out.
