Wooden Ships Comments on this McGruer Rowing Tender

9′ Clinker rowing tender built by McGruer & Co. likely as a tender to one of their larger yachts. Often the job of building the tender for a new build yacht was given to the apprentice, overseen by the more experienced shipwrights.  Exactly which yacht this dinghy belonged to is not known.

Elegant dinghy in tidy condition, kept indoors away from the elements to protect the timber and varnish. Spruce planking makes for a lighter hull than using mahogany. Sensibly priced dinghy with a nice pedigree.

Construction

Clinker planked in Spruce. all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

Laminated oak stem and oak keel.

Mahogany sheerstrake and  oak transom.

Inwhales made from spruce with elegant steamed quarter knees and breasthook.

Mahognay thwarts with oak hanging knees.

Equipment

Pair of oars

Pair of rowlocks

Slatted sole boards
