Wooden Ships Comments

Designed by W.McC. Meek and built by Brooke Marine of Lowestoft in 1939.  A typical cruising yacht of the period with an elegant counter stern, spoon bow and full underwater sections making her buoyant and dry.

Bought by the present owners in 1995, she was lying in Portugal in a bad state.  After road transportation back to the Netherlands, a 3 year refit started which included a new deck, new interior, all new systems, machinery and electrics, new rigging and sails plus a lot of new equipment.  Another smaller period of work in 2013 saw the replacement of several planks in the bottom.

Since then the owners have had many years of happy cruising with her around the Baltic and down to western France and the south coast of the UK.

Arguably a very beautiful boat, she is very easily managed with the yawl rig and an ideal classic yacht for cruising northern Europe.  Well equipped, she has been in the hands of very diligent owners for over 20 years.  Newly painted and varnished for the 2016 season.

ConstructionClassic Bermudan Yawl



Planked in 1” pitch pine on doubled sawn oak frames, 4 ½” x 2 ½” at 72cm centres.  2 steamed oak ribs 2” x 1 ¼” in between.  Fastenings are bronze screws in the hood ends and copper rivets in the frames.

Full length bilge stringer bolted through the sawn frames.  Heavy section beamshelf, doubled up through the midships sections, with iron hanging knees and lodging knees.

Galvanised steel strap floors on every sawn frame.

External lead ballast keel, 3000kg.  Bronze keel bolts renewed 1992 – 1995.


Decks and cockpit

Yacht laid teak deck on a double layered Nautex marine plywood subdeck.  The original solid teak deck was carefully removed during the refit, thicknessed to 13mm and laid back down on the plywood with Sikaflex glue.

Small varnished teak bulwark all round set on stanchions mounted through the coverboard and side bolted to the sawn frames.  Bronze stanchions with aramide  guard wires all round.

Bronze deck fittings and galvanised stem head fitting.

Deep self draining cockpit, all varnished teak with tiller steering.



Coachroof coamings in varnished teak with 3 bronze port holes each side.  Coachroof deck laid T&G pine, fibreglass sheathed and finished with white deck paint.  Full length scrubbed teak hand rails on the coachroof.



Masthead bermudan yawl rig on keel stepped solid wooden masts finished in gloss white paint.   Solid wooden booms, staysail boom and bowsprit also finished in white gloss.

Slab reefing main and mizzen booms

Twin spreader main mast and single spreader mizzen with stainless rigging to bronze rigging screws and internal chain plates.

Inner forestay to the stem head takes a hanked on staysail with a self tacking boom for ease of handling.  jib on a roller furling system and a traveller to take it to the bowsprit end.



Mainsail – De Vries 1998.  30sqm.  Fair condition.

Mizzens 1 & 2, both 1998.   8.5 sqm in fair condition.  7 sqm in good condition.

Staysail – De Vries 1998.  25 sqm in good condition.

No1 Jib – De Vries, 2009.  18 sqm.  Fair condition.

Nos 2 & 3 jibs – De Vries, 1998.  18 & 16sqm, fair condition.

Foresail – De Vries, 1998.  12sqm.  Needs replacing.

Storm jib – De Vries 1998.  3sqm.  Unused.



2 x mast winches, 4 x cockpit.  Harken, self tailing, bronze 2 speed.



MachineryClassic Bermudan Yawl



Yanmar  3GM30 3 cylinder 30hp diesel installed in 1998.  Single lever controls with a centreline stainless shaft to 14” fixed 3 blade prop.   Prop and stern gland replaced in 2016.

Cruising speed 5 kts, max speed 7 kts.  Consumption 5L/Hr.



Fuel:  120 litres in a plastic Vetus tank under the cockpit floor

Water: 100 litres in a Plastimo plastic tank in foc’sle.



3 x AGM 140ah.  Charged from the engine alternator or when connected to shore power via a 35 amp Mastervolt Chargemaster.  12v domestic electrics.


Bilge pumps

2 x electric bilge pumps, automatic.  1 x Whale manual bilge pump.







4 berths total with 2 saloon settee berths and a double in the forecabin.



Steps down over the engine box with galley to port and forward facing chart desk to starboard with a seat.  Full standing headroom of 1.75m throughout the saloon.

Half height bulkheads either side with full length settee berths.  Backs fold up to make the berths wider and more comfortable, large lockers under the berths.  Scrubbed teak saloon table on stainless legs set slightly off to port. Scrubbed teak sole boards.

Passage way to starboard going forward into the forepeak with a heads compartment to port and a double V-berth in the forepeak.

The joinery is finished as matt varnish teak with gloss white panels giving a light and spacious feel to the cabin.  Upholstery all replaced in 2016.



Blake sea toilet, pumps directly overboard.



Galley with scrubbed teak work tops has been sympathetically designed to fit in with the boat.  Gimballed Force 10 2 burner gas stove with grill and oven.  Single stainless sink pumps directly overboard, manually pumped fresh water.  Top access storage locker at the aft end of the galley.


Heating.  Eberspacher diesel heater.
