Wooden Ships Comments on this Salcombe Net Boat

Salcombe Net Boat built in 2003 by acclaimed local boat builder Mike Atfield on the lines of the local net boat ‘Spitfire’ which was originally built in 1937.

These boats were used for local inshore fishing and were designed to be stable and safe working platforms.  These qualities make them excellent family boats; stiff, solid and stable, they are perfect for exploring the rivers and local coast.

Mike Atfield built a number of these boats as they proved very successful.  The design is more than a clinker dinghy, they are substantial work boats more akin to motor launches, but with the benefit of a quiet, smooth and economic modern outboard engine.

The build quality is excellent as would be expected from Atfield, but what is difficult to portray in photos is the sturdiness of the build, everything is ever so slightly oversized, not enough to make the boat clunky and unattractive, but just the right amount to give her a feeling of solidity and strength.

In the present ownership for the last 7 years, she has been stored ashore undercover every winter and professionally maintained.
