Wooden Ships Comments on this Ian Oughtred Shearwater

The Shearwater is a planing hull dinghy designed by Ian Oughtred and another example of his prowess as a designer of small boats.  This boat is slightly different to the standard Shearwater in that she was extended by 18″ to create a slightly faster and more capable boat.  This work was done in conjunction with Oughtred, the designer, and the plans were approved by him.

Built by a very skilled amateur in 2009, she was bought immediately after completion by the present owner who had a professional boat builder check the integrity of the hull and was impressed with how well she had been built.  The boat has been used once since she was finished and since then has been dry stored.  She sits on a new combination trailer which has done less than 100 miles.

The Shearwater is a fast and responsive boat with potential for some exciting sailing if desired, also capable of taking a bit of weather and chop.  Ideally crewed by two but being slightly larger this boat can easily take 3 and could also be easily sailed by one person with her simple rig.

The glued plywood construction makes her very light so she is easily launched and retrieved making her a simple and hassle free trailer sailer.  Virtually a brand new boat in immaculate condition and ready for the summer
