Vertue No. 47, designed by Laurent Giles and built by Harry Feltham of Portsmouth in 1952.  All teak planking and non-ferrous fastenings.

She has a very well documented history of extensive cruising throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with trips to Scotland, France and the Baltic.  She was laid up ashore in 1985 and remained there for 30 years until she was taken in by the present owner, a retired time served boat builder who started an extensive and meticulous refit which last 2 years.  The bottom end was completely rebuilt with the keel off, the centreline re-fastened, planking re-caulked, the deck replaced and all new engine, systems, rigging and sails.

She is now in very sound condition, beautifully presented and ready to sail.

The Vertue is one the most iconic British yacht designs of all time, examples of which have voyaged the world and proved themselves as incredible sea boats with capabilities far beyond their size.  This particular boat is a very nice example, painstakingly refitted to a very high standard.

Construction

Planked in full length Teak all copper rivet fastened to steam bent Canadian Rock Elm timbers.  Three grown frames each side in way of the chain plates.

Garboards removed and re-fastened with bronze screws in 2016.

Hood end screws fore and aft all replaced with silicone bronze in 2016.

All plank seams re-caulked and payed with red lead putty.

Marine plywood deck, sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and painted in non-slip paint.  The deck was new in 2016 and any necessary repairs to deck beams and beamshelf were done.

Sawn oak floors across the centreline.   All centreline bolts replaced in bronze.

External lead ballast keel of 2.25 tons with bronze keel bolts.  All bolts X-rayed in 2016 and found in perfect order.

Varnished teak coachroof coamings and sheathed coachroof deck.

Self draining cockpit with tiller steering and an transom hung rudder.

Rig

Bermudan ‘slutter’ rig, normal to Vertues with a removable inner forestay so she can be sailed as either a cutter or a sloop, with the choice for using a small jib on the inner forestay in heavy weather.  A very versatile and proven rig.

Deck stepped varnished spruce mast with 2 sets of spreaders.  Varnished spruce roller reefing boom.

Stainless steel standing rigging, new in 2018 to internal bronze chainplates.  Twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud.

Standing backstay to a varnished oak bumpkin.  Dyneema running backstays on bronze Highfield levers support the mast in way of the inner forestay.

New running rigging throughout.

Pair of mast winches for halyards and a pair of Simpson Lawrence 3″ non self tailing cockpit sheet winches.

Mainsail, genoa and staysail all in Clipper Canvas new in 2019 from East Coast Sails.  Large collection of older sails including all her original cotton sails.

Machinery

Yanmar 1GM10 diesel.  Dates from 1995 but with very low hours.  Overhauled with new exhaust manifold and new water pump in 2017.

Single lever controls to a fixed 3 blade bronze propeller giving 4.5 knots cruising speed.  The stainless shaft, coupling and propeller were all new in 2017.

16 litre stainless steel fuel tank under the bridge deck.

2 x 12 volt gel batteries under the pilot berth, charged from the engine alternator.

3 manual bilge pumps.

Accommodation

3 single berths including a starboard side quarter berth and 2 saloon settee berths.

5’10” headroom in the saloon.

The interior is largely original in varnished teak and mahogany.  Coachroof deckhead and focsle re-painted, varnish work tidied up.

Steps down over the engine box into the main saloon with galley area to port and quarter berth to starboard.

Galley has an Origo 3000 2 burner spirit stove on gimbals.  Stainless steel sink with manually pumped fresh water.  Storage space from crockery and supplies.

2 full length settee berths with nice original joinery throughout.

Double folding doors on the centreline into the focsle with a Baby Blake sea toilet which discharges directly overboard.

Anchor locker in the bows with a custom made removable fibreglass chain locker.
