Wooden Ships Comments on this Morgan Giles Bermudan Cutter

Designed by Morgan Giles and built by Morgan Giles and May Ltd of Hythe, Southampton in 1914.

Bought by the present owner in 2017 and totally refurbished over a 20 month period. Now a very smart yacht which attracts a lot of attention.

The hull was stripped to bare, a small number of planks replaced and 3 frames, otherwise the hull was found to be sound.  Cockpit totally rebuilt, interior refitted, engine rebuilt, all new systems and wiring.  The rigging and sails are all new, she has been put back to the original rig design of a bermudan cutter with a fixed bowsprit.

2019 survey available, currently afloat in commission and being used on a regular basis.

Construction

Planked in 3/4″ Pitch Pine copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers .

Grown oak floors across the centreline.  Galvanised strap floors through the midships, all cleaned and painted in the refit.

External iron ballast keel with iron keel bolts.

Original laid pine was cleaned of the old canvas sheathing and a new yacht laid teak deck glued over the top using Sikaflex and screws.  Varnished mahogany king plank.  Varnished mahogany toe rails with guard rails on bronze stanchions.

Mainly bronze deck fittings and features.

Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings.  Cockpit coamings replaced in the refit.  Epoxy sheathed plywood deck.

Non self draining cockpit, totally rebuilt in the refit.  New Sapele coamings with all new thwarts and framing.  Sole boards in scrubbed teak, thwarts in varnished pitch pine.  Neat locker fronts to lockers under the side decks.

Tiller steering with new stainless steel rudder stock.

 

 

Rig

Bermudan cutter rig on a  keel stepped varnished pine mast.

Varnished slab reefing boom, new bronze fittings and bronze goose neck fitting.

Stainless steel standing rigging new in 2019, to bronze external chain plates.

Twin spreaders with a single standing back stay plus running back stays on tackles.

Jib to bowsprit end on a Wickham Martin bronze furling system, staysail hanks to inner forestay.

Pair of bronze Lewmar 40 non self tailing cockpit sheet winches.  Single mast winch.

Running rigging falls the base of the mast.  Most ropes are classic braid style.

New sails in 2019 by Sanders Sails.  Mainsail, staysail and yankee all in excellent condition.

Machinery

Beta Marine 3cyl 20hp diesel thoroughly refurbished in the refit.

Engine refurbished with new starter motor, alternator, thorough service and new control cables.

Centreline shaft to a feathering 3 blade Darglow Featherstream propeller gives 5 knots cruising speed.

50 litre plastic fuel tank in cockpit locker, new in the refit with all new pipe work and filters.

2 x 12 volt 110ah batteries under companionway steps, charged from engine alternator.  Boat completely re-wired.

1 manual and 2 auto electric bilge pumps.

 

 

Accommodation

Simple yet smart clean and crisp accommodation.  2 settee berths in the saloon a large double V-berth forward.

Steps down into the saloon with galley to port.  Galley has a 2 burner  gas stove with combined sink and glass lids that drop down to cover them.  Pumped fresh water from a 40 litre plastic tank in the port cockpit locker.  Sink drains into a jerry can that is then emptied over the side.

12 volt fridge set into the forward starboard bulkhead.

Switch panel, VHF and storage shelves on aft bulkhead starboard side.

Full length settee berth either side with new upholstery.  Centreline varnished mahogany dropleaf table.  Painted sole boards.

Bulkhead at forward end of the salon is all new in varnished T&G Sapele.

Starboard side door going forward with the heads to port.  Heads is a Jabsco  Deluxe electric flush heads which discharges directly overboard.  Brass hand basin with manually pumped fresh water.

Forepeak has a large double V-berth with new mattress and upholstery.  Forehatch above.
