Wooden Ships Comments on this Peter Duck Ketch
Designed by Jack Laurent Giles and built by Porter and Haylett of Wroxham in 1962. She was the 6th of the Peter Duck ketches built. The Peter Duck is well known for its connection to Arthur Ransome, the very first one being designed for the writer by Laurent Giles just after the war. In 1961 the design was revived, altered a little and a total of 38 boats were built up until 1970 by Porter and Haylett Ltd of Wroxham.
Built to Lloyds 100A1 she was kept in class until approximately 20 years ago.
Maintenance on this yacht has tailed off in recent years and she is now in need of a good refit. The engine was replaced in with a 35hp Beta that has low hours. The hull appears to be remarkably sound with little evidence of decay, even around the deck where soft patches would normally be expected.
The Peter Duck is a popular easily handled cruising boat with a very easily handled rig and a large interior volume for the length with excellent headroom. These boats are not fast but are very seaworthy and comfortable. Although this yacht will require a considerable amount of work she is priced sensibly and will make a lovely yacht for the right person.

Construction
Planked in iroko all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers. Sheathed externally from new below the waterline with Cascover. Various patches in the Cascover have been made using fibreglass.
Wooden floors across the centreline with some galvanised strap floors further aft.
Cast iron ballast keel fastened with galvanised steel keel bolts.
Semi swept teak deck screw fastened to a marine plywood subdeck, seams payed with butyl rubber.
High toe rail all round with galvanised stanchions.
Iroko coamings for coachroof and dog house with sheathed plywood coachrof decks.
Large cockpit with thwarts either side giving access to deep lockers. Mizzen mast stepped through cockpit sole.
Transom hung rudder on ferrous hangings with tiller steering.
Rig
Bermudan ketch rig on deck stepped box section wooden masts and wooden slab reefing booms. Main mast new in 2011.
Varnish on all spars in poor condition with some evidence of failing glue joints.
Galvanised steel standing rigging of unknown age with bronze rigging screws to internal galvanised chain plates. A number of the chain plates are severely corroded. Some rigging new in 2011.
Full set of sails including mizzen, mainsail, furling genoa, working jib, mizzen staysail and spinnaker.
Rotostay roller furling headsail system.
Pair non self tailing cockpit sheet winches and a pair of mast halyard winches.
Machinery
Beta Marine 35hp 4cyl marine diesel installed new in 2009.
Stainless shaft to a centreline 3 blade bronze propeller.
2 x 12 volt batteries, 74ah start battery and 110ah domestic battery, charged from engine alternator.
Accommodation
4 single berths.
Steps down over the engine box with galley to port and chart desk to starboard.
Galley has a Plastimo Voyager 4500 2 burner stove with grill and oven, set on gimbals. Stainless sink with manually pumped fresh water.
Chart desk faces outboard with chart storage under and a large locker below.
Main saloon separated off with a keyhole bulkhead, Settee berth either side with lockers under the side decks.
Centreline varnished mahogany saloon table.
Centreline passage going forward. Lavac sea toilet located to port, discharges directly overboard. Hand basin to starboard with manually pumped fresh water.
Forward cabin with twin V-berths and storage below.
