Wooden Ships Comments on this 12 Ton Hillyard
A 12 ton Hillyard bermudan sloop, built by Hillyards in 1960 and absolutely typical of their design and build. David Hillyard was a clever yacht designed and came up with a new concept for a yacht to enable ordinary families to get out on the water in safety and comfort. Double ender hull with bluff ends in order to maximise use of the length on deck. Centre cockpit allowing for a separate aft cabin, central saloon and a seaparte forward sleeping acbin a design unheard of until Hillyards started building yachts like this. It allowed for comforatble family crusing with 2 separate sleeping cabins and a communal saloon with standing headroom and comfortable seating.
This boat has benefited from caring owners and had a new Beta diesel fitted in 2004 with major work carried out to the stem and stern posts in recent years. She is a very respectable and sound example of the Hillyard design and will provide many happy years of sailing in the future.

Superstructure and cockpit
Mahogany coachroof coamings finished in cream gloss with bronze portholes. This boat has a centre cockpit arrangement with the aft coachroof over the aft cabin. The centre cockpit is a deep and safe design with a canvas sprayhood making it very sheltered. there is an aft section to the sprayhood which then completely encompasses the cockpit making a totally sheltered area and also allowing the crew to move from stem to stern completely sheltered from the elements. This is a key design feature of the Hillyard and sets them apart from most other contemporary yachts, it is a design that has frequently been used and developed in the years since creating comfortable and spacious family cruising yachts.
Wheel steering on the aft bulkhead of the cockpit with cables to the rudder head running along the port side deck.
