Wooden Ships Comments on this Paul Gartside rowing skiff

Built by Adrian Morgan, a professional shipwright experienced in building traditional boats based on the shores of Loch Broom.  The design was that of ‘Bob’ drawn by Paul Gartside as a 16′ double ended rowing and sailing skiff.

The original design was for cold molded construction so Adrian Morgan cleverly adapted the plans in order to build the boat in a more traditional clinker style using Vendia, a modern timber based material produced in Finland.

Vendia is a laminate material made using sliced layers of timber from the log, rather than large peels as used in plywood.  It is worked in a similar way to traditional timber planks but is uniform in its thickness and dimensions making the build quicker and simpler.  The finish is that of solid timber so looks superb with a clear varnish coating.  Lots more information can be found about Vendia on the web at http://www.vendia.fi/products

It was decided to keep her as a rowing skiff without the dipping lug rig she could have had but there is scope to adapt if required.

The result is a beautifully finished and very nicely presented 16′ rowing skiff which weighs only 135lbs (62kg) and is a pure delight to own and row.  She comes with a recent road trailer and all over cover so is ready to be launched and used immediately.

Glued clinker plank construction using Vendia with glued plank lands.  5 laminated Vendia frames are copper riveted through the hull.

The glue used is Collano Separoc, not epoxy.

Oak back bone, stem and stern post.

Oak rubbing strake with a Douglas Fir gunnel gives stiffness to the hull and support for the rowing positions.

2 solid Douglas Fir thwarts.  The aft one can be moved depending on whether there are one or two rowers.  3 fixed rowlock positions for use with either one or two rowers.

3 adjustable stretchers fitted for supporting the rowers feet.

Varnished mahogany sole boards.

Gaco style oars made for the boat in light pine with turned handles.  Captive style gates rather than traditional rowlocks.
