Wooden Ships Comments on this Payne Clark Bermudan Ketch


Designed by J. Payne Clark and built by W.M. King and sons of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1925 for a member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.  She has a well documented history and gained herself a reputation as a fast passage making yacht and successful racing boat with a useful handicap and many race victories to her credit.  Her weight, long water line length and healthy ballast ratio mean she is exceptionally good at sea and has proved herself many times to be a comfortable and fast sailing yacht.

Presently in a long 25 year experienced ownership, she has been very well maintained and sympathetically updated so that she is now a first class classic yacht in full working order.

Planked in teak all fastened with copper rivets and roves to steam bent oak timbers, 1.5″ x 1″ at approximately 6″ centres.

Larger section frames in way of the mast.  Large section grown oak hanging knees and lodging knees, all copper rivet fastened.

Iron strap floors across the centreline with galvanised floor bolts and throat bolts.

Oak back bone with an external lead ballast keel of approximately 4 tons.  Phosphor bronze keel bolts, drawn in present ownership and found to be in excellent condition.


Decks and cockpit

Self draining cockpit is separated by a bridge deck carrying the main sheet horse and with the mizzen stepped through it, giving the helmsman his own space at the aft end.

Varnished teak cockpit coamings and thwarts.  Sliding companion hatch to the main cabin offset on the port side.

Yacht laid solid 25mm Iroko deck, caulked and payed in the traditional manner, and bronze ringshank nailed to the deck beams with a varnished teak king plank.  Deck laid in 1998.

Varnished teak cover boards with a high toe rail all round and a varnished rubbing strake outboard.



Coach roof design is typical of the period being quite narrow leaving wide side decks.  Varnished teak coamings with round bronze port holes and a sheathed plywood coah croof deck.

Varnished teak butterfly skylight on the centreline looks very pretty and allows plenty of light and ventilation into the cabin.

Bermudan ketch rig on keel stepped spars.

Mainmast was built in 2001, hollow elliptical Douglas Fir spar tapered to the head.  Hollow rectangular section slab reefing boom.  Twin hollow rectangular spinnaker poles.

All rigging in 1×19 stainless steel, majority replaced in 2008.  Sloop headed rig with twin forestays, single cap shroud, single intermediate shroud and twin lowers over twin varnished spreaders.  Twin standing backstays.

Mizzen mast of similar construction to the main with slab reefing boom.  Stainless rigging on the mizzen, single spreaders with a single cap shroud and twin lower shrouds.  Dolphin strut acting as the forestay.  All mizzen rigging dates from 1992.

Perkins Perama M35 34hp 3cyl diesel installed new in 1992.  Approximately 1400hrs running time.  Consumption of 3 litres/hr at 1800rpm.

Hurth HBW100 mechanical gearbox replaced new in 2007 with single lever Morse control.  Centreline stainless shaft to a fixed 3 blade 15″ bronze propeller set in an aperture in the rudder with a rope cutter.

2 x 105ah batteries, dedicated engine start battery and domestic battery.  Chargng from engine alternator (new in 2005)

Very nice largely original panelled interior joinery.  The layout is separated as many gentleman’s yachts of this period were, offering accommodation in the forepeak for a paid hand with a distinct and separate area aft of the saloon for galley.



7 berths including a port side quarter berth, two saloon settee berths and two pilot berths in the saloon, plus two single berths in the forepeak.



Steps down from the companion hatch to the galley and chart desk area which has full headroom.  Galley to starboard, chart desk facing aft to port, folds out to lengthen the quarter berth.  Instruments above the desk so can be easily viewed.  Access to the engine is via small doors behind the companionway steps.

Bulkhead dividing the galley area off from the main saloon with a centreline panelled door into the saloon.

Port and starboard saloon settee berths with backs that fold up to make pilot berths when necessary.  Centreline dropleaf gimballed table works very well at sea.  Lots of storage cupboards and shelves with much nice original joinery.

Heads compartment at the forward end of the saloon to port.

Centreline door through another bulkhead into the forepeak with a good size single berth to port and the mast in the middle of the cabin.  To starboard is a tall locker with a seat forward, plus a second single berth that drops down when necessary.



Double folding door arrangement creates a spacious and privates heads compartment.  Blakes Lavac manual sea toilet discharges directly overboard.  Locker under the deckhead for storage.



L-shaped galley with a Plastimo 2000 gimballed 2 burner gas stove with oven and grill.  Twin stainless steel sinks pumped directly overboard.  Manually pumped fresh and salt water into the sinks.  Tiled work top with ample storage below.
