Wooden Ships Comments on this Andrew Wolstenholme Cat Boat

Designed by Andrew Wolstenholme, based on the cat boats found on the east coast of America, and professionally built by David Moss Boat Builders in 1986.

This is an exact replica of Pipkin which is in the sailing collection of the National Maritime Museum and was built to the same high standards that David Moss is known for in all his boats, using modern construction methods to create a very light but strong and resilient boat.

In 2013 she had a thorough refit by David Moss to bring her back into sparkling condition, and was bought by the present owner in 2014.  Since then she has been used only occasionally and dry sailed, stored indoors when not in use so her condition has remained extremely good.  Since 2014 she has been professionally maintained with all varnish work attended to in 2016/2017.

This is a special little boat in superb condition and absolutely ready to go with everything required to go exploring this summer.

The cat boats are known for their capability and stability, the wide beam makes the safe and stable boats while the decks allow them to take on more weather than an open boat of a similar size.  Gorgeous to look at and a pleasure to sail.

Length                 12’3″

Construction

  • Hull is built from strip plank cedar glued with epoxy.  Khaya veneer glued to the outside surface of the hull
  • Sheathed plywood decks finished in non slip cream deck paint.  Varnished mahogany rubbing strake all round.
  • Varnished mahogany coaming nicely steam bent around the fore and aft curves of the cockpit.
  • Varnished mahogany thwarts and slatted pine sole boards.  Buoyancy bags under the side thwarts.
  • Centreplate in  casing at the forward end of the cockpit operated with a block and tackle.
  • The aft thwart doubles as a storage locker with a lockable centre hatch.  Large storage space under the foredeck.
  • Tiller comes through the transom under the aft deck with a drop down ‘barn door’ type rudder typical of Cat boats and ideal for shallow water.
  • 2016/2017 the boat was totally re-varnished by a professional team.

Rig

  • High peaked gaff rig typical of cat boats on a keel stepped varnished spruce mast placed well forward in the hull.
  • Varnished spruce boom and gaff yard.
  • The mast has a forestay in stainless steel to a stainless stemhead fitting, but is otherwise unstayed and relies on the support at deck level to hold it.
  • Cream terylene mainsail in lovely condition, laced to the spars and sheeted to the aft deck with the tail of the mainsheet coming to a block on the centreboard case for ease of use when sailing.
  • Slab reefing with the ability to put in one deep reef.
  • Halyard falls go through turning blocks on the foredeck and back to the cockpit coaming so the sail can be easily raised and lowered.

Machinery

  • Yamaha 2hp 2 stroke outboard engine fits to the transom with a well in the aft deck.
  • Last serviced in October 2017 and not used since.
  • Lightweight and simple, this outboard has more than enough power to get you home when required.
