Maurice Griffiths Good Hope ketch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Maurice Griffiths Good Hope ketch

Good Hope ketch designed by Maurice Griffiths and built by Whisstocks of Woodbridge in 1968.

This is the first boat built, named Good Hope and designed to be a comfortable and spacious cruising yacht that is easy to handle and safe.  She features a manageable ketch rig, sheltered helm position under the wheelhouse, centre cockpit with an aft cabin and spacious living accommodation.  7 berths including a large double.

She has been in the present ownership since 1996 and used for sailing around the West Country and English channel, frequently single handed proving how easy she is to sail.

She had a new Volvo 55hp diesel fitted in 2006 which has been well maintained and cared for.

A fantastic live aboard cruising yacht with plenty of space at a sensible price.

Norman Dallimore Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Norman Dallimore Gaff Cutter

Designed by Norman Dallimore and built by W. King and Sons of Burnham -on-Crouch in 1924.

Taken on by the present professional shipwright owner in a poor state in 2015 and given a thorough refit which included a new stem, new keel bolts, new ring frame, new rig, sails and engine.  In 2018 a counter stern was added transforming her into an elegant and eye catching yacht.  It looks as if she has always had a counter and the way in which this has been done is excellent.

She has a most unusual yet original sliding teak dog house which can be pulled back over the cockpit for shelter but pushed right forward out of the way when sailing.  It has of course been completely rebuilt and looks like new but is exactly to the original design and is a very unique and interesting feature.

She has been sailed extensively with cruises around Brittany and the Scillies as well as racing in the 2018 Falmouth Classics where she won her class for 30′-40′ gaffers.

The interior fit out has been finished extremely well, keeping as much of the original pitch pine joinery as possible and complimenting it with new joinery in varnished oak.

This is a very elegant and nicely restored classic yacht with good pedigree in very sound condition.

Varnished teak butterfly skylight just aft of the mast.

Very deep cockpit with varnished teak coamings.  She has a most interesting sliding dog house, newly built in varnished teak but to the original design which slides on bronze runners.  This comes aft to cover the majority of the cockpit, but when sailing can be pushed right forward o give on open and more spacious cockpit.  Conventional sliding varnished teak companion hatch.

30sqm Windfall Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this 30sqm Windfall Yacht

Designed and built by Abeking and Rasmussen in 1937, this 30sqm yacht was one of the naval training vessels that formed part of the fleet of  Windfall Yachts.  Until the end of The Second World War these yachts were used by the Luftwaffe and Kreigsmarine for training their officers, particularly navigation officers, until they were taken as spoils of war in 1945 and used for a similar role by the British military.

This boat has been in private ownership since 1950, racing on the south coast around the Solent and Poole.  After falling into disrepair, she was given and extensive rebuild in 2009 at the Clare Lallows boatyard in Cowes where all necessary repairs to hull and decks were done and a newly designed rig fitted.  Since then she has raced successfully in many classic events, proving to be a fast and easily handled yacht with superb lines.

The current owner has overhauled the machinery and spent a lot of time improving the cosmetics and finish of the yacht so she is now in sparkling condition.

She has a current IRC certificate.  2018 survey available.

Buchanan Viking Class

Wooden Ships Comments on this Buchanan Viking Class

The Buchanan Viking class was another successful design from Alan Buchanan, one of the most highly regarded naval architects the UK has seen.  The Viking was designed as a fast cruising yacht with shallow draft making her ideal for the East coast of the UK which was Buchanan’s stomping ground.  To enable her to stand up to her canvas with her draft of only 4’10”, she has a healthy ballast ratio with a 2.18 tonne external ballast keel, and a most remarkable hull shape midships with a big belly and a sharp turn to the bilge giving her the distinctive brandy glass shape.  This not only gives the hull tremendous buoyancy making her a stiff boat in a breeze, but also gives the saloon a vast amount more space than a comparable yacht of her era, when aboard it is hard to believe she is only 31’ on deck.

She has the typical sheer line of a Buchanan yacht rising sweetly at bow and stern, and a marked tumblehome on the transom all which makes the Viking a very pretty  yacht.  Built by Johnson and Jago of Southend-on-Sea in 1967 to Lloyds100A1 and kept in class until 1978.

This is a well travelled example of the class having sailed to the Caribbean and back in a previous ownership where she competed in the Antigua Classics Regatta on two occasions.  In recent years she has benefitted from a complete new rig and sails and a lot of professional routine maintenance.  Used by the current owner for an extended trip around Ireland, she has been a very reliable and comfortable cruising boat.

The Viking is a very pretty and hugely capable yacht offering a lot more than her 31’ would suggest, with good performance, beautiful lines and good manners at sea.

Hull

Planked in mahogany all copper rivet fastened to closely spaced steam bent oak timbers.  Splined above the waterline and payed with red lead below.

Galvanised iron strap floors with galvanise floor bolts.  External iron ballast keel of 2.18 tonnes fixed with 30mm stainless steel keel bolts.  Several keel bolts drawn in 2011 and found to be in excellent condition.

Transom hung rudder on new bronze hangings

2019 transom repaired with some new ends of the planks and the hull completely stripped to bare wood and re-painted.

Decks and cockpit

Marine plywood deck screwed and glued to the deck beams, sheathed externally in epoxy glass cloth and finished with cream deck paint.  Deck structure sits on a conventional beamshelf with a strengthening clamp in way of the mast.  Galvanised hanging knees and lodging knees for added strength.

Varnished teak upstanding toe rail on the outer edge of the deck, otherwise she has flush and wide decks making movement around the boat an easy task.  Stanchions mounted in bronze bases bolted through the deck slightly inboard of the toe rail.

Spacious self draining cockpit with a removable sole hatch to gain access to the stern gland.  Port and aft thwarts open into large lockers.  Bridge deck to the companion hatch for access below decks.  Full set of cockpit cushions with waterproof covering.  Canvas spray hood on a stainless frame gives good shelter in the cockpit.

Superstructure

Low profile coachroof with varnished teak coamings and a nicely radiused coachroof deck giving ample headroom below.  Some of the Viking class yachts have a raised doghouse aft which rather spoils the line of the deck, however this one was built with a flush coachroof giving her a far prettier outline

Varnished teak handrails on the coachroof deck with dorade boxes for ventilation.  Hatch forward of the mast giving access below.  Organisers on the coachroof deck lead the halyard and reefing line falls aft to jammers and a halyard winch either side of the companion hatch.

Saloon

Spacious saloon due to the shape of the hull and the generous beam meaning the settee berths are slightly further outboard than they would be in other boats of her ilk.  This gives a wider cabin sole and generally more space in which to move around.

Saloon settee berths having split folding back rests allowing the backs to be pushed up out of the way making the berth much wider and comfortable for sleeping.  Large amounts of storage space beneath the berths.

Varnished mahogany drop leaf saloon table with fiddles.  Very adequate shelf space around the saloon with lots of locker storage.

All interior lighting has been converted to LED bulbs which vastly reduces the draw on the batteries.

Buchanan Bermudan Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Buchanan Bermudan Cutter

Designed by Alan Buchanan and built by Kings of Burnham in 1963 for Bernard Hayman, previous editor of Yachting World.  She is an exceptional sea boat with good windward performance and designed to take whatever the seas may throw at her.

Hayman was an exceptional sailor and together with his yacht was the first western sailor to enter Russia post WWII.

He wrote extensively about his sailing exploits and the benefits of a well designed yacht for proper sailing where he was a strong advocate of employing new technology such as roller furling and self tailing winches to aid the lone sailor.

This yacht is not a typical Buchanan with long overhangs and the sweeping sheer, she instead has a relatively high freeboard making her spacious below decks with a transom hung rudder.  Her virtues become apparent at sea where every part of her has been cleverly designed to make a superb sea boat.  The way she sails, the strength of the build, the layout below, the available storage and plenty of hand holds are all indications of what this yacht was designed originally designed for and is capable of.  She may not be festooned with double berths but she will look after her crew in any weather and will behave exactly as a proper yacht should.

Fitted with a new engine in 2016, new mainsail in 2018 and updated cosmetics and paint work, she is in excellent condition and ready to sail.  2021 survey report.

Rig

Masthead Bermudan cutter rig on a keel stepped alloy mast with an alloy slab reefing boom.  Pair of alloy spinnaker poles.

Hayman spent much time planning the rigging and wrote extensively on the subject of having a versatile and easily managed rig for short handed sailing.  His opinion was that this yachts rig is the ideal set up for a short handed sailor, offering several very efficient sail combinations to suit wind strength.  He was absolutely of the mind that a heavily reefed large genoa on a roller reefing system was not a suitable sail for upwind sailing in heavy weather and that reducing the height aspect of the rig by setting sails from other forestays was a far preferable option.

Close coupled inner and outer forestay, both with roller furling.  No.1 Profurl new in 2007.  A third inner stay to the spreaders allows a heavy weather staysail to be set on hanks.

Stainless steel standing rigging new 2005 with bronze rigging screws to stainless steel chain plates.

This boat was designed for long distance cruising and that is evident from her layout and design features.  The berths are all excellent sea berths, the storage areas are plentiful and secure, handholds are numerous and priority has been given to a full size chart table.

Steps down into the saloon with a massive 6’7” of headroom.  An easily accessed quarter berth either side, forward of this is the galley port and chart table to starboard.  The interior finish is simple yet smart with painted bulkheads and varnished trim.

The settees are relatively small as they do not double up as berths.  Pilot berths behind these are full length, deep and safe with large front accessed storage lockers beneath.  Centreline table hinged off the mast folds away when not in use.

Alaska oil fired cabin heater on the forward bulkhead.

Passageway offset to starboard into the forecabin with the heads and storage.

Laurent Giles Lymington L Class

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Lymington L Class

The Lymington L Class was designed by Laurent Giles and was the fore runner to the Vertue which is easy to see by looking at her lines.  This yacht was built by Elkins of Christchurch in 1933.  She was the 2nd L Class to be built out of 18 in total, commissioned by Colonel Bland-Strang.

The boat had a major refit in Cornwall in 2003 for a previous owner and was purchased by the current owner in 2008.  Since then she has been professionally maintained each year and improvements made to her rig and equipment.  She appears to be a smart and well cared yacht with lovely lines and nice pedigree.  Since 2008 she has been day sailed in the Solent on a regular basis.

A very pretty, well equipped and nicely presented yacht that is ready to go sailing.  The owner has a large road trailer which can take the boat and could be available to a purchaser if desired.

Sparkman and Stephens Finisterre Yawl

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman and Stephens Finisterre Yawl

Built in 1960 by the Wing on Shing Shipyard in Hong Kong to the Sparkman and Stephens Finisterre design.  She was built for Group Captain Ingle of the Royal Cruising Club and was shipped straight back to England after her launch.

Built from well seasoned high quality teak, this is a hull that will last a lifetime.

In 1981 she returned to the Royal Cruising Club and has been with the current owners ever since, wearing the Commodore’s broad pennant for a spell. She has been cruised by the family and by other friends around northern Europe and the north Atlantic between Iceland, Portugal and the Azores.  She has also been cruised by many young people and, exceptionally, has won the RCC Cadet trophy five times. In recent years she has been based on the West coast of Scotland and is a well known boat on that coast and around the Shetlands.

The Finisterre is a well known design, easy on the eye with good performance and comfortable at sea.  The owners have often sailed her twohanded, the split rig making her an easily handled and manoeuvrable yacht in all conditions.

This is a yacht that has been sailed many thousands of miles in the current ownership and has recently sailed south from Scotland.

November 2020 survey available.

Morgan Giles Bermudan sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Morgan Giles sloop

Designed and built by Morgan Giles of Teignmouth in 1958, she was the result of a commission from the then Lord Devonport for a capable offshore racing yacht, a role which she proved more than capable of fulfilling. Using modern construction principles she was something of a benchmark design in the 1950’s and although a one-off design many of the elements found their way into subsequent designs.

Now in only her third ownership, she was found by the current owners following an extended lay-up and in need of some TLC in 2000.  As a professional shipwright the current owner embarked upon a four year restoration of the boat which saw her stripped back to a bare hull and deck structure before being completely rebuilt.   Since being relaunched she has completed more than 8000 miles of cruising exploring waters from La Rochelle to the Pentland Firth.

This is a very manageable yet capable cruising yacht in superb condition, ready to go sailing this summer.  With a detailed refit history any new owner will be confident of the quality of boat they are taking on.  She has just been launched after a thorough cosmetic refit and is in very smart condition.
