Fred Parker Motor Sailer

Wooden Ships Comments on this Fred Parker Motor Sailer

Built by the Sandbanks Yacht Company Ltd in 1948, one of two boats built, believed to be to a Fred Parker design.

She is a practical and comfortable coastal cruising boat with a large aft cockpit, decent size wheelhouse and a cabin forward with the heads, galley and an extra berth.  The small Bermudan rig is easily managed and although she will not win any races under sail, she will move along nicely in a free wind.

Bought by the present owner in 2013, she has had a lot of professional refit work carried out including a complete new foredeck, plenty of new planking and frames and other general improvements.

An ideal boat for coastal pottering and weekends afloat, she is safe, sea worthy and easy to handle with a good mix in interior and exterior space.

McGruer Bermudan Ketch

Wooden Ships Comments

Designed by Ewing McGruer and built by McGruers of Clynder on the Clyde, Scotland in 1929.

This yacht was built for a Dr Carslaw, a founding member of the Clyde cruising Club and launched as Rowan 11 in 1929. Dr Carslaw had 2 boats built by McGruers.   Dr Carslaw wrote about his sailing exploits around the West Coast of Scotland in his 4 yachts in a lovely little book – Leaves from Rowan’s Log.

Rowan lV shares a recognisable feature with Judith/Rowan ll, the dog-house, which is not typical of McGruer’s work and must have been a special request from Dr Carslaw on both yachts. One can understand that the dog-house on both boats must have been a great advantage sailing in the Scottish climate.

Sold by Wooden Ships to the last 2 owners, most recently in 2019.  After this sale the boat was given to a yard and a substantial amount of professional refit work was carried out.  Sadly ill health forced the owner to stop the work, and now after the sad death of the owner, the yacht is being sold by his estate.

A detailed survey was carried out in 2019 identifying numerous repairs required.  A very accurate account of exactly what repairs were done was recorded by the yard and is available for any prospective purchaser to read so it is possible to ascertain quite accurately the extent  of the work required to get her back into shape.

At 11 TM this is a very sweet yacht with a fine bow and a lovely elliptical counter stern.  The work done recently has been a huge benefit to her longevity but there is much more to do and she requires a new owner with time and enthusiasm to carry this work on.

Peter Duck Ketch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Peter Duck Ketch

Designed by Jack Laurent Giles and built by Porter and Haylett of Wroxham in 1962.  She was the 6th of the Peter Duck ketches built.  The Peter Duck is well known for its connection to Arthur Ransome, the very first one being designed for the writer by Laurent Giles just after the war.  In 1961 the design was revived, altered a little and a total of 38 boats were built up until 1970 by Porter and Haylett Ltd of Wroxham.

Built to Lloyds 100A1 she was kept in class until approximately 20 years ago.

Maintenance on this yacht has tailed off in recent years and she is now in need of a good refit.  The engine was replaced in with a 35hp Beta that has low hours.  The hull appears to be remarkably sound with little evidence of decay, even around the deck where soft patches would normally be expected.

The Peter Duck is a popular easily handled cruising boat with a very easily handled rig and a large interior volume for the length with excellent headroom.  These boats are not fast but are very seaworthy and comfortable.  Although this yacht will require a considerable amount of work she is priced sensibly and will make a lovely yacht for the right person.

William Atkin Eric

Wooden Ships Comments on this William Atkin Eric

William Atkin ‘Eric’ class yacht built in Malaysia in 1974 using very durable tropical hardwoods.

She is a sister ship to Suhali, the Eric class yacht sailed around the world by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, which tells us everything we need to know about her capability and pedigree.

In 2015 she had a very thorough professional refit which included a new engine, new running and standing rigging, new masts and many other jobs.  Since that time she has been used extensively but in recent years has been a little neglected due to ill health.

Her main issue is the deck which needs replacing.  The hull is built from excellent timber and appears to be sound as far as can be seen.  The engine was new in 2015 and has been used very little.

Although looking a little tired at present this boat has excellent pedigree and is well worth the time and effort of refitting her, she will make an excellent blue water cruising boat with the ability to go anywhere in the world.

Self draining cockpit, recently rebuilt in marine plywood.

Inchcape 45 Trawler Yacht

Inchcape 45 Trawler Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments

The Inchcape range of motor sailer designs were the result of a collaboration between Jack Francis Jones and James Evans of Eyemouth Boatbuilding Company who built the Inchcapes at their yard in Berwickshire.

His designs were inspired by the Scottish fishing boats which were built to be strong, powerful and seaworthy vessels capable of working in the North Sea and North Atlantic all year round, Evans wanted to replicate these virtues in a pleasure yacht so that owners had the comfort of a yacht with the strength and peace of mind of a fishing boat.  They achieved this blend and came up with a variety of sizes, the Inchcape 45 being one of the more popular of the range.  Several were built over the years, but this is the very last example having gone down the slip in Eyemouth in 1990.

She was built for a Portuguese gentleman who cruised her around the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal.  She was then sold and spent 10 years cruising the Baltic Sea covering many miles.  The next owner kept the boat in Falmouth and was a meticulous and careful owner, undertaking a thorough refit of the hull, rig and systems.

She was then sold to the present owner in 2016 who has put the boat through a no expense spared period of work, upgrading every aspect of the boat and bringing her up to the standards required for the MCA code of Practice Category 1.

This is a fully equipped and absolutely ready to go cruising yacht with a huge internal volume allowing her owners to go anywhere in the world in style, safety and comfort.  She is the ideal boat for live aboard cruising, something many people are now able to consider with the ability to work remotely, having a yacht like this as their base and cruising gently from port to port.

She has better sailing capabilities than one might expect, in anything more than 12 knots of breeze she will move without help from the engine.  At 20 knots plus she will be flying along with a very comfortable motion.

Kim Holman Stella

Wooden Ships Comments on this Kim Holman Stella

Designed by Kim Holman and built by Tucker Brown of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1968.

The Stella was a very popular design, derived from the Folkboat but slightly bigger all round with more volume and a bigger rig.  To this day there is still an active fleet racing on the east coast and they have proven themselves as capable and easily handled pocket cruiser racers.

This yacht has undergone a period of meticulous maintenance over the last 10 years in present ownership with new keel bolts, complete re-wire, strip and re-paint of the interior and exterior hull, new deck sheathing and a new boom.

She is a well equipped and very well presented example, in absolutely ready to sail condition.  She has been subtly optimised for racing but still retains many of her original features.

$ berths, including 2 pipe cot berths in the forepeak make her ideal for cost effective family cruising and racing.  The Stella is just light enough to go on a trailer and be towed on the road giving flexibility on winter storage and generally helping to reduce running costs.

She was commissioned by Dr Joe Cunningham , a founding member of the Ocean Cruising Club, who had been working as a GP around Newfoundland and Hudson Bay after the War.  He wanted a yacht that was capable of carrying him to remote communities and naturally turned to the Vertue design due to the reputation these boats have as very capable offshore cruising boats.

With the experiences of Humphrey Barton crossing the Atlantic in V35, Cunningham altered the build to include an extra plank in the topsides and a different superstructure design with no dog house and the coachroof extended aft.

The rig was reduced in height and changed from the traditional ‘slutter’ to a cutter.

Joe Cunningham left to cross the Atlantic in 1952 and arrived safely in Newfoundland after travelling through Madeira, Barbados and then north via Bermuda, Newport and Halifax.  Here he continued to work as a GP using Ice Bird as his travelling base enabling to do exactly as he had planned, reaching remote communities in need of medical assistance.  Ice Bird stayed in the family and was sailed by Cunninghams nephew around Iceland and Biscay, the tale of which was written up in a 1970 Yachting Monthly article.

Kept in tidy condition and updated as necessary with new standing rigging and mainsail this year, this is a yacht with a rich history and all the pedigree of the great Vertue design.

Alfred Mylne Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Alfred Mylne Sloop

Designed by Alfred Mylne and co. and built by the Bute Slip Dock Ltd in 1961.

With 4 known previous owners she has apparently spent most of her life in Scotland, mainly cruising the west coast.  Bought by the present owner in 2011 and refitted at that time to include checking keel bolts and new standing rigging.  The boat has been re-wired in July 2021.

A very elegant boat, set up for single handed sailing, she is easy to sail alone or with a crew and offers good performance for cruising and racing.  Interior volume is better than might be expected with 5 berths and over 6’ headroom.

Currently the yacht is in need of a refit and her asking price has been adjusted accordingly.  Although a detailed survey has not been carried out it is understood the deck is in poor condition in places, the paint and varnish needs a complete refit and some internal systems such as wiring need attention.  More detailed information available on request about the scope of refit work required.

Described by Ian Nicholson, well known surveyor and author as “one of the loveliest boats in Britain.”

Herreshoff Islander

Wooden Ships Comments on this Herreshoff Islander

Herreshoff Islander designed by the Herreshoff office and built by Port Hamble Ltd in 1953.  A large number of these boats were built here in the UK but most were shipped to the States so it is not common to see one of these attractive day boats over here.

Sydney Herreshoff was a successful designer and wanted to produce an easily handled but capable day sailing boat.  They are known to be fast little boats, quite capable and with a small cabin have the option of spending nights aboard.

Weighing only 1.25 tons the Islander can be easily towed on the road for hassle free and cost effective ownership.

Holman 26

Wooden Ships Comments on this Holman 26

Holman 26 built by Uphams of Brixham in 1963.  Kim Holman was one of the best know English yacht designers from the period with many fine yachts of all sizes to his name.  His 26 footer was a stock design to appeal to a wide market and it proved very successful.  These boats are easily handled but have good headroom and 4 berths, one of the best small cruising yachts available.

This yacht has had some major work in the last 2 years including new standing rigging, a rebuilt engine and new keel bolts as well as various plank repairs and a general paint up.  She is not immaculate but is a solid little cruising boat, with all the important parts refitted, that could be sailed and enjoyed this summer.
