Sandbanks Yacht Co. Bermudan Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sandbanks Yacht Co. Bermudan Sloop

Built by the Sand banks Motor Co. in 1939.  It is understood she was designed by Eric H. French but it is also thought Fred Parker was involved in this design.

She was built for Arthur Strohmenger, inventor of ARC welding who then sold her to Lord Lyle of Westbourne in 1947 who used her in the Solent, before she was bought by Californian yacht broker Augustus J Newman.  She eventually came to Dartmouth in 1972 where she has been based ever since.

Bought by the current owner as a project boat to use in his retirement, however other projects have taken priority so she was never completed.  The boat has been sat ashore for a few years and is in need of some significant repairs including new fore and aft decks.  She appears to have a very good rig and engine.

This is very much a project but for the right person would be a worthwhile task and she would be a lovely boat once completed.  She shallow draft and easily handled rig make her ideal for coastal exploration, enabling her to explore upstream where deeper boats cannot go.

Sparkman & Stephens sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman & Stephens sloop

This yacht has undergone a major refit in 2021 to replace the entire rig and repair the hull as necessary after being dismasted in a previous ownership.  All work professionally done to a high standard under the supervision of a surveyor, full survey report available.

Designed in 1975 by Olin Stephens as a yacht for mass production in the USA which was to be known as the Tartan 37.  A plan for a British variant, the Condor 37, was developed for the European market and approximately 12 of these are known to exist.  This vessel was built as the plug from which the mould was produced, but it had always been intended to complete her as a finished yacht.  The bare hull was taken by H E Wright who fitted out and completed her as a cruiser racer.    She has been cruised and raced successfully by several previous owners with appearances at various classic regattas.

Olin Stephens himself came to the UK and met with Wright during the build and fit out process to discuss the boat and offer advice.

She is also a very comfortable and easily handled cruising yacht, capable of being short handed and with plenty of space aboard.

Very well maintained, she is a stunning looking yacht in nice condition.  She has the benefit of a more modern design which offers a lot of interior volume for the length, with the relatively high freeboard and wide beam adding to this interior space.  The teak deck and varnished teak coamings, cockpit and toe rails add a touch of classic charm.

Over the summer of 2021 she has undergone a major refit to for a complete new rig after losing her mast in an accident with the previous owner.  All repairs to the hull have been carried out professionally and the complete rig including sails is brand new.

2021 survey available.

Morecambe Bay Prawner

Wooden Ships Comments on this Morecambe Bay Prawner

Built by Crossfields of Arnside in 1936, probably as a fishing vessel but her early history is not well known.

A history of the Crossfields yard can be found here: http://arnsidearchive.org.uk/?MARITIME_HERITAGE:Crossfields_of_Arnside

In a previous ownership she had a major refit which included complete re-fastening of the hull, new deck, deck beams and coachroof, new mast and all new rigging.

She is currently in need of a cosmetic tidy up but appears to be structurally sound.

She has no engine, there is an outboard which mounts on a bracket on the quarter which pushes her along very satisfactorily, plus there is a large sculling oar which is extremely useful.

An attractive looking boat with a well documented recent refit history, in need of tidying up.  Good headroom and space below decks considering her dimensions.

Tumlare Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Tumlare Sloop

Designed by Knud Reimers and built in Sweden in 1934 as Tumlare No.9, originally called Keb.

This distinctive design, developed from the Scandinavian Skerry Cruiser type, dates from the 1930’s when the great Swedish designer Knud Reimers was at his best.   There are classes of Tumlares racing in many countries round the world, described by Uffa Fox as “the most advanced type (of cruiser) in the world….” A class grew up in UK at Aldeburgh and St Mawes but the design really came to fame after Adlard Coles won the 1950 Trans-Atlantic Race in Cohoe a slightly stretched version at 32’ confounding the critics who maintained that small yachts were incapable of off-shore voyages.

The Tumlare has a slim, slippery hull with long drawn-out forward sections and that distinctive Scandinavian canoe stern with the rudder hung on the back.

Purchased by the current owner from Holland in 2004, she had a refit period where the majority of the galvanised steel frames were replaced with laminated oak.  In 2007 her deck was replaced with epoxy sheathed plywood and in 2014 her keel bolts were replaced.

She differs from many Tumlares in that her rig is slightly larger and her mast is deck stepped, thought to have been done in Holland in the 1990’s.

Used for day sailing on the south coast, she is not an immaculate example but the structural elements have been cared for and she is out sailing on a regular basis.  Priced sensibly taking into consideration the cosmetic refit that will likely be required.

It also seems she has a little more sheer in her hull compared to some other Tumlares, a subtle element that seems to enhance her looks and makes her a very pretty yacht.

Length on Deck                 27’3”

Length Waterline             21’2”

Beam                                    6’3”

Draft                                      4’3”

Construction

Carvel planked in a close grain Scandinavian pine.

Steam bent oak timbers fastened with copper rivets.  Originally the boat was built with galvanised frames and these have been replaced with laminated oak throughout most of the hull, although a few galvanised frames still remain.  This work was done in 2006.

Galvanised plate floors across the centreline tied into the keel bolts.  New floors in 2006.  They are side fastened to the frames so can easily be unbolted and replaced when necessary.

External lead ballast keel of 1 ton fastened with stainless steel keel bolts, all new in 2014.

Epoxy glass sheathed plywood deck laid on pine deck beams.  New deck in 2007.

Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with a painted plywood coachroof deck and bronze port lights.

Non-self draining cockpit with varnished mahogany coamings, cockpit feels slightly larger than some other Tumlares with a little more space.

Rig

Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped varnished spruce mast.  Varnished spruce boom.

The rig has been altered from the normal Tumlare design, slightly enlarged with the forestay further forward and the mast further aft.  This was done in Holland at the same time as she was converted to deck stepped to increase space below.  The hull has been strengthened with 2 plywood ringframes, hanging knees and larger deck beams to take the pressures of the mast.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless chain plates.  Twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud over the spreaders.  Jumper struts supporting the mast head.  Standing backstay to the masthead and running backstays to the jumpers, tensioned with block and tackle.

Each winter, the boat is stripped down and fully covered. Every spring, she is painted, varnished and cleaned, machinery and rigging serviced, and the boat generally kept up to an exacting standard.

Since she was launched, Freja has sailed around 25,000Nm, much of it with just the husband and wife owners aboard.  She has proved to be an easily handled boat and is particularly fast in light airs.  The owners have pushed the boat and know her ways extremely well. They have much knowledge about the yacht, which will be passed on as much as possible to her new owners.  She is a joy to sail, easily handles heavy weather and has been a very safe and comfortable cruising boat.

A beautiful-looking yacht in superb condition, ready for a new chapter.

She is currently berthed in Sweden, but the owners would sail her back to the UK for a new owner.  If brought back to the UK by the current owners, there will be no need to pay VAT upon arrival.  If sold to an EU buyer, VAT will not be charged on the sale price.

Holman Sterling Bermudan Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Holman Sterling Bermudan Sloop

Designed by Kim Holman, this Sterling was built by his brother Jack at the Uphams yard in Brixham in 1965, the last of 19 Sterlings built.

Often thought of as the cruising sister to the Twister, these boats are a delight to sail and have a generous volume for their dimensions with a large comfortable cockpit, good headroom and 4 berths.

This yacht was bought by the current owners after being laid up ashore for a number of years and has been brought up to a good standard in recent years, cruised extensively around local waters and lavished with much care and attention.

Her rig, rigging and sails were all new and first used in 2018.  The engine has had a complete rebuild and is in very good order.  The interior has been painted, had new upholstery and the galley refitted with a new stove and sink.

The owners have changed their sailing plans and moved on to a larger yacht for more extended cruising so wish to find a loving new home for this nice yacht.

Saloon table is a clever design used by Holman that folds away against the forward bulkhead when not in use.

Centreline passageway going forward with a manual Jabsco sea toilet to port which discharges directly overboard.  Hanging lockers to port.  The doors of the two bulkheads close up to create a large heads compartment right across the breadth of the boat.

10 ton Hillyard ketch

Wooden Ships Comments

10 ton Hillyard ketch built by Hillyards in 1968.

One of the later design evolutions with a hard chine to increase internal volume.

Bought by the present owner in 2014, she had previously been in the same ownership for over 40 years and had been maintained to a very high standard.  In the present ownership she has had a thorough cosmetic overhaul inside and out making her a very smart and tidy yacht.  She has also had a new rudder stock, re-caulked garboard seams and all new sail and hatch covers.

She also has a relatively new all over winter cover to fit around the masts making an ideal storage environment when ashore.

This is a very smart yacht but also quite original that has not been messed about with too much.  She is an extremely comfortable cruising boat for a couple with a large aft berth and spacious saloon, plus she is very easy to handle with her moderate split rig meaning no individual sail is particularly large or difficult.

A really nice quality Hillyard with plenty of volume for her length and ideal for liveaboard cruising.

Survey from 2018 available.
