Tall Ship Phoenix

Tall Ship Phoenix For Sale

Wooden Ships comments on this square-rigged tall ship for sale

The Phoenix is a 111ft square-rigged tall ship built by Hjorne and Jakobsen of Frederikshavn, Denmark, in 1929 as a Baltic Trader.  Instead of working the traditional trading routes, she set off as an evangelical mission schooner which she did for 20 years until she was used for cargo for many years.

Tall Ship

She was first converted in 1974 before being bought by Square Sail in 1988.  She had a lot of work done at that time and was converted to her current configuration to be used in film work.  She has appeared in many feature films and television dramas, giving her a fine reputation as an adaptable and effective filming platform.  Filming she has worked on recently includes In the Heart of the Sea, Poldark, Taboo and Frontier.

Because Phoenix has been a commercial boat for many years, she has been subject to regular and well-documented refit work with large amounts of replacement planking, re-fastening and other work as required, all of which have been documented and are available for inspection.

She is licensed under the MCA Category 2 for 60 miles from a safe haven for 12 persons.  The commercial licence was renewed in 2021.

Tall Ship

She is an unusual vessel, the likes of which rarely come on the market.  Her rig is not just for show; she is a very capable sea-going sailing boat that does not need a huge crew to handle her and could be sailed anywhere in the world for new owners or for future film work if desired.  Her appearance can be easily altered to adapt to her many different roles, something which has been proven many times before.

In April 2022, the vessel completed filming on her third series of Outlander in Scotland.  She recently teamed up again with Ridley Scott for his latest film, soon to be released. In March, she also featured in Great Expectations with the BBC on the River Beaulieu.  In this 2022 season, The Phoenix will be appearing at maritime festivals in UK and Ireland and is a favoured vessel for sail training excursions in the UK and Europe. Film projects in the pipeline include The Phoenix featuring as ‘The Beagle’ made famous by Captain Fitzroy and Charles Darwin’s voyage to the southern ocean.

Max Oertz Bermudan Cutter

Wooden Ships comments on this Max Oertz Bermudan Cutter

44′ bermudan cutter for sale designed by Max Oertz and built by Hans Heidtmann, Hamburg in 1925.

Max Oertz was the Kaisers naval architect and was responsible for the Kaisers own yachts, Meteor IV and Meteor V, as well as numerous 10m rule yachts and his big schooner Germania.

This design was very advanced for her time and an unusual design but proved to be fast and sea-worthy, winning the North Sea Race and the Kieler Woche in the late 1920s.  She later moved to the UK and was in the ownership of the Blewitt family for many years (Mary Blewitt of RORC fame) and later owned by Maurice Laing, who operated her as a sail training vessel in Scottish waters.

After a complete rebuild in the mid 1990s, she was purchased by the current owners in 2007, who have continued to update and maintain the boat to a very high level.  A full list of recent works is available upon request but includes a new engine, new teak deck, new sails, new ballast keel and keel bolts and an updated interior.

Since 2007 she has been raced regularly in classic sailing regattas proving to be a fast, comfortable boat and a real head turner.  Her large sail area and long waterline length make her a fast boat but still easily handled and suitable for family cruising.

A superb sailing yacht with a fully documented history, well maintained and up to date, ready for the season.

Westcountry Trading Ketch Bessie Ellen For Sale

Wooden Ships Comments on this traditional wooden tall ship For Sale

A tall ship for sale, Bessie Ellen, is a 118ft gaff ketch built in 1904 by W.S Kelly of Plymouth as a trading ketch, one of many similar vessels plying their trade around the coast of the UK and Ireland.

The current owner refitted her as a charter vessel, retaining as much of her original charm as possible. She has operated successfully around the UK, northern Europe and the Canary Islands for many years.  This is an active vessel with an excellent reputation and has an income potential with current activities upwards of £250,000 per year.

Bessie Ellen has a traditional feel but is equipped with modern electrical, mechanical and domestic systems making her a warm, safe and comfortable sailing yacht to be aboard even in cold northern climates.

She has a large saloon, historically her cargo hold, with 12 single berths for guests and lots of seating.  Forward is a crew cabin with separate heads; aft is the owner/skipper’s cabin.  The commercial-grade galley is fully equipped for charter sailing.

She is virtually unique due to her certification level, which would be very difficult to obtain if starting afresh with another vessel.  Her certification includes:

  • MCA Category 0 for 12 passengers plus 6 crew
  • Class VI passenger licence for 60 day passengers
  • Cargo licence for 50 tons of cargo.

Bessie Ellen is registered under 24m so can be captained with an RYA Yachtmaster commercial licence making her an easy boat to crew.

The vessel is fully equipped with all the necessary safety, navigation and general equipment for her certified level of commercial operation.

Constantly maintained by a professional group of experienced craftsmen, this vessel must be one of the best examples of a traditional wooden sailing ship afloat and is in first-class condition ready for commercial sailing.  Her MCA commercial licence is fully up to date with all necessary gear and equipment.

Charter vessel for sale

She has a very well booked charter season for 2024 and a schedule coming out soon for 2025.  The current owner will continue to market, operate and maintain the vessel until she sells.  If desired, a new owner could take on the vessel and business to include all the current bookings.  Details of her income potential are available upon request, however a quick study of her sailing itinerary will show income potential upward of £250,000 per year.

Alan Buchanan Viking Class Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Alan Buchanan Viking Class Sloop

Built by the current owner for himself and launched in 1983.  The owner is a time served shipwright and completed the boat to a very good standard.

In the early 1980’s when the idea of building a yacht had surfaced, the owner remembered the line plans of a Buchanan yacht in one of the magazines.  After visiting Buchanan himself and discussing his needs, they settled on the plans of the Viking Class.  The boat was built in a purpose made dry shed on the banks of Pill Creek near Bristol, a village steeped in boating history and closely connected to the Pilot Cutters.  She has been berthed in Pill creek since her launch, cruised from here around the Bristol Channel, south Wales and West Country.

The Viking was a successful design for Buchanan and proved to be a fast and easily handled cruising boat.  The relatively shallow draft of 4’7” means she can access areas deeper boats cannot and with a ballast ratio of 43% she is a very stiff and weatherly boat.

A well maintained and solid cruising boat, built and sailed by the current professional shipwright owner.

Laurent Giles Vertue V40

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Vertue V40

The Vertue is one the most iconic British yacht designs of all time, examples of which have voyaged the world and proved themselves as incredible sea boats with capabilities far beyond their size.  This particular boat, Laurent Giles Vertue V40, is a very nice example, that has benefited from a regime of continuous maintenance and light use.

Designed by Laurent Giles and built by Stebbings of Burnham on Crouch in 1951.  She was built for the Festival of Britain exhibition in 1951 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival_of_Britain) as an example of top class British boat building and craftsmanship, there are black and white photos of her being exhibited with her original varnished hull.  She was named ‘Festival Vertue’ when launched.

After this she remained in the same family for over  50 years, based in Essex, where she was very well maintained and had a major professional refit in 2005.  She then moved to Devon where she is now based and has been kept up to a very good standard by her diligent owner with professional help where required.  She has had only 3 fastidious owners since 1951

This is the short doghouse model giving a slightly larger cockpit and a bridge deck, ideal for weekend and day sailing.  The interior offers 2 comfortable berths and 6′ headroom plus a heads and galley, everything you need for local cruising and long weekends aboard.

Annual refits have been carried out each year for the current owner by a professional shipwright keeping her in good overall order. (Schedule is available)

Benefitting from a Nov 2022 Survey, the Surveyor concluded “Virtue Fidelis was generally found to be in very good order, particularly in view of the fact that the vessel is more than 70 years old.” and valued her at the current marketing price of £22,000

This is a very smart example of the Vertue in ready to go condition with a nice pedigree and history.

November 2022 survey available.

Laurent Giles Vertue II

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Vertue II

Based on the famous Vertue design by Laurent Giles, this is the very first example of what was known as the Vertue II, the same lines but built using GRP, completed in 1979 and built to Lloyds 100A1 classification.  Shortly after completion, the boat was exhibited at the London Boat Show in 1979.  This is the first and and possibly the best GRP Vertue II, a superb and immensely capable short handed blue water cruising boat.

The most notable feature of this boat compared to other examples of the Vertue II is her interior.  Because she was due to be exhibited at the boat show, the yard put a lot of time and effort into building her interior using solid teak giving her a cozy and comfortable feeling comparable to some of her earlier wooden sister ships.  Later boats were not fitted out to this high standard due to the extortionate cost.

Sold into Swedish ownership in 2010 where she has been based ever since, cruising the archipelagos and coasts of the Baltic.  Last year she was sold, bought by an Australian for an intended long distance cruise and she had considerable investment with new gear and equipment in readiness for that trip.  Unfortunately plans have changed, the trip cancelled and the boat must be sold once again.

The boat had been totally prepared for this voyage and is a fully equipped, turn key blue water cruising boat in ready to go condition.  Recent updates include:

2021 survey

New Liferaft

New AIS

New roller furling headsail system

New batteries

New EPIRB and PLB

She has been well maintained and continually upgraded over the years.  She is well set up for single handed sailing, easily handled by one person and capable of offshore cruising in rough weather if required, the Vertue has often been referred to as the ‘greatest offshore cruiser’.

Lug Rigged Hillyard Ketch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Lug Rigged Hillyard Ketch

Originally a 4 ton Hillyard, built by Hillyards of Littlehampton in 1937.  Refitted and altered by a well know West Country boat builder and traditional ship owner in his retirement.  He added a larger coachroof for added headroom and converted her from a transom into a Colin Archer style canoe stern with a rudder hung on the stern post.  He also fitted a new 2 mast lug rig.

This is a highly unusual and unique little boat that is certainly eye catching and a bit special.  Her rig is fascinating because the booms are fixed to the mast, so that the whole mast rotates in a bearing when altering the sheets.

This is something a little different with a good amount of internal space but still a small enough yacht to keep running costs and handling issues to a minimum.

Length on Deck                 25’

Length Overall                   31’

Beam                                    8’6”

Draft                                      4’

Construction

Carvel planked in mahogany all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

Groan oak floors across the centreline with the keel bolts through the floors.

External iron ballast keel with steel keel bolts.  History of the bolts is unknown.

Epoxy sheathed marine plywood decks finished in non-slip deck paint laid over a T&G sub deck.

High bulwark all round of marine plywood with an iroko capping.

Varnished teak coachroof coamings, raised by the previous owner to give more headroom below.

Cambered coachroof deck of sheathed marine plywood over T&G boards on oak deck beams.  Oak supporting knees on the coamings.  Bronze round portholes.

Rudder hung on the stern post similar to the Colin Archer boats.  Oak tiller but can also be steered with the fitted wheel that operates the tiller with rope pulleys.

Rig

Ketch rigged standing lug on keel stepped masts.

The booms are fixed to the masts with galvanised fittings so that the whole mast rotates in a simple bearing when sheeted in or out.

Spars re-varnished in 2021.

Galvanised wire standing rigging with spliced ends to dead eyes and lanyards.  External stainless steel chain plates.  Simply rigged with a single pair of shrouds either side.

Cutter headed rig which sets a staysail and jib.

Mainsail, mizzen, staysail and jib all in excellent condition.

Buchanan Cruiser Racer Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Buchanan Cruiser Racer Sloop

Designed by Alan Buchanan and built by Priors of Burnham in 1959 to Lloyds 100A1 standard for competing in RORC Class II racing.

She proved to be a fast, successful yacht in her early years. She was featured in Yachting Monthly 1961.  The design is notable for the extra beam, much more than was usual at this period.  She has a large cock-pit with plenty space for the crew to work the yacht, wheel steering keeps the helmsman out of the way and her extra beam allows for wide clear side deck and plenty room around the mast.

She had a major refit by David Moss Boat Builder, Fleetwood in 2007-8 with full photographic record and continuous updating.  More recently she has had a new Beta Marine engine in 2018 which has hardly been used.

6 berths with 6’6” headroom, this is a very elegant and fast cruiser racer, ideal for classic regattas or just family cruising.

Bought by the present owner in 2021 after she had been laid up afloat for a couple of years.  The owner had planned to carry out the required refit but circumstances dictate he wishes to sell her again.

The yacht had a full out of water survey carried out by a competent wooden boat surveyor in September 2021.  This survey has highlighted exactly what is required to get the boat back into sailing trim and this work has been quantified by various boat yards with figures available to any prospective purchaser.

This is a very elegant yacht in need of a refit before the sailing season.  All the information is available to a prospective purchaser to make an informed decision about exactly what work is required and how much that will cost.

Sparkman and Stephens teak sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman and Stephens teak sloop

Designed by Sparkman and Stephens, S&S drawing No.153 dated 9th December 1936.

Built by AH King Slipways, Hong Kong in 1949. Supposedly built for Ambassador Carlos Romulo of the Philippines, a general, journalist, WWII resistance fighter and later a UN representative.  Brought to New York while Romulo was working for the UN, she came into the present family ownership in 1967, sailing out of Maine for many years before moving to the eastern Mediterranean in 1992 where she has remained ever since.

Her exact condition is not clear, but given the quality of her hull planking it is likely the hull can be restored.  Some work is certainly required around the stern post.

The interior is quite remarkable, completely original and untouched, she is a real time capsule and a very rare opportunity for someone looking to restore their own classic yacht.

The owner is anxious to find a suitable new custodian who is able to give the boat the sympathetic refit she deserves.
