Holman 26

Wooden Ships Comments on this Holman 26

Holman 26 built by Uphams of Brixham in 1963.  Kim Holman was one of the best know English yacht designers from the period with many fine yachts of all sizes to his name.  His 26 footer was a stock design to appeal to a wide market and it proved very successful.  These boats are easily handled but have good headroom and 4 berths, one of the best small cruising yachts available.

This yacht has had some major work in the last 2 years including new standing rigging, a rebuilt engine and new keel bolts as well as various plank repairs and a general paint up.  She is not immaculate but is a solid little cruising boat, with all the important parts refitted, that could be sailed and enjoyed this summer.

34′ Swedish Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this 34′ Swedish Sloop

Built in Sweden in 1938, she was the result of a design competition for the Royal Swedish Yacht Club which aimed to stimulate innovation and design amongst the younger naval architects in Sweden.  The winning designers name was Syersen.  After being built, the yacht was given away in the yacht clubs raffle the following year and was won by a Scottish sailor who brought the yacht home to Scotland before the start of WWII.  She has spent her entire life in Scotland and is a well known yacht, sailing the west coast for more than 30 years with the current owners.

A very elegant and fast yacht but of a sensible and manageable size that does not need a large crew.

Maintained to a good standard and recently launched after a spring refit.

William Atkin Bermudan Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this William Atkin Bermudan Cutter

Built in 1981 by R. Fung Co. Ltd of Hong Kong, a yard known for producing robust and capable wooden boats.  The design is one of William Atkins who took inspiration from the famous Colin Archer yachts of Norway with a canoe stern, long keel and very generous beam.  Atkin is famous for a number of his designs, not least that of the ‘Eric’ class, the design of Robin Know-Johnstons Suhali.

This boat spent her early years in Asia, winning the San Fernando race from Hong Kong to the Philippines at one stage.  She was sailed back to the UK, arriving here in 2005.  The current owner bought her in 2009 when he had the coachroof professionally replaced

VAT was paid upon arrival in the UK and all paper work is with the boat.

Being built in Asia, the timber used in her construction is first class.  All teak hull planking with tropical hardwood used for keel, frames and floors.  The quality of this timber is evident now, some 30 years later when it is extremely good condition.

The internal volume of this yacht is vast for a boat of only 32’ length on deck, her generous beam allowing for a large saloon and a great feeling of space.  Her design and robust construction make her well suited to blue water cruising, and with a Bermudan cutter rig she is easily handled, even when single handing.  She would make an excellent live aboard cruising yacht for exploring the far corners of the world on a budget but still in safety and comfort.

Falmouth Pilot 9 ton Ketch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Falmouth Pilot 9 ton Ketch

Designed by Rodney Warrington-Smythe who, with his brother Nigel owned the Falmouth Boat Construction Co, Falmouth in the 1960s. Two sizes of Falmouth Pilots were built, the small 6 tonner and the larger 9 tonner like this yacht.  Only some 6 examples were built of the larger 9 tonners, being more expensive yachts. This one was built for the author Nigel Tangye in 1964 and he recorded her in several books.

Bought by the current owners in 2006, she was sailed for several seasons before undergoing a thorough professional refit in 2010 which included a new deck and new rigging.  This refit was recorded in detail and all photos and records can be made available for a new owner.

The Falmouth Pilot offers a lot of volume for the length, an easily handled rig and a large cockpit suitable for sociable sailing days.  Her shallow draft is a bonus for many, allowing access to waters out of bounds to deeper draft yachts.  This draft does not take away from her sea keeping abilities and she is a very capable design.

This yacht has been well cared for and is presented in smart cosmetic condition.

Lifted ashore in June 2021 for survey, report available to perspective purchasers.

Sole Bay 35

Wooden Ships Comments on this Sole Bay 35

Designed by J. Francis Jones and built by Armstrongs of Scarborough in 1965.  The design of this hull was used for the Guernsey pilot boat, proving the capability and seaworthiness of this hull.

Long keel with a transom stern and high bows, she is not a high performance sailing yacht but is supremely comfortable and safe in adverse weather, an ideal blue water sailing yacht that will look after the crew in any conditions.  The size of the boat and rig mean she can be easily sailed singlehanded, and with inside and outside helm positions she is a very versatile yacht.

Professionally maintained in current ownership and kept up to a very good standard.

Itchen Ferry Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Itchen Ferry Gaff Cutter

Built in 1898 by Hayles on the Isle of Wight on lines of the Itchen Ferry but as a gentlemans yacht.

Discovered as a derelict wreck in the late 1980’s, a complete professional rebuild commenced that eventually saw the boat re-launched in 2003.  The hull and decks were rebuilt from the bottom and she is now in superb structural condition.  Purchased a few years ago by the current professional shipwright owner who has improved the boat immensely and brought her up to a very high standard of finish inside and out.

The rig required attention and she has had a new set of sails, new running and standing rigging plus various alterations to improve the overall condition and performance of the rig.

There is little to do apart from continued work on the cosmetics as would be expected on any boat of this type.

The interior offers a surprising amount of space for a boat of only 22′ in length with 3 good sized berths, heads and a galley.  The cockpit has space for 3 comfortably while sailing and is deep enough to feel safe and secure.

A beautifully presented and very pretty gaff cutter with a well documented history in superb condition inside and out. 2020 survey report available.  Lots of history and documentation going back to 1914 with logs from various cruises.

Back on the market after only 1 season due to family circumstances.

Itchen Ferry Gaff Cutter Yacht

Wooden Ships Comments on this Itchen Ferry Gaff Cutter Yacht

Itchen Ferry built as a yacht by Berthon of Lymington in 1926.  It was quite common for private individuals to commission a new yacht based on the proven design of local working boats.

She underwent a major professional rebuild in the 1990’s which included many new frames and planks, a complete new deck, rig and interior.  Since that time she has evidently been very well maintained and updated as necessary including a new engine in 2009.  The last survey from 2013 is available, since which time no expense has been spared on her maintenance.

Her dimensions show she has a very generous beam at over 9’ for a 25’ yacht, this helps open up the interior volume but also gives her a healthy waterline length, meaning she is no slouch in favourable conditions, regularly clocking 7 knots if allowed.  Her Thames Tonnage of 7TM shows just how voluminous she is for a boat of her length.

She has been cruised by the current owners mainly in the Solent, easily sailed by a husband and wife crew and welcomed at all the traditional yachting events.

This is an exceptionally nice yacht, superbly well maintained and with a great history and pedigree.

Mooring for the 2022 season already paid and available to a purchaser if required.

Laurent Giles Wanderer

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Wanderer

Laurent Giles Wanderer design built by the International Boatbuilding Training College, Lowestoft, in 1985.  She was built for a chap at the college by the students, supervised by the professional on site shipwrights.  It is clear from some of the detail the students were testing out many of their new found skills with some intricate finishing touches not normally seen on a yacht of this type.

Bought by the present owner shortly after the build and kept on the south coast with summer cruising around the English Channel.  In recent years she has been slightly neglected and is in need of a new owner to take her on and carry out the various repair jobs required.  A full list of the work needed is available on request.  The hull is basically sound and in very good order, she is mainly suffering from fresh water damage around the top and a lack of maintenance in the last few years.

5 berths with full standing headroom throughout, a proper cockpit and an easily handled rig.  The Wanderer is known for being a sea kindly, safe and very capable boat, it is not often one comes on the market and they tend to be very sought after.

Although in need of some refit work, the boat is sensibly priced and well worth the effort as she will be a superb, very safe and easily handled cruising yacht once finished.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Royal Mersey Restricted Class Gaff Cutter

Plymouth Hooker Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Plymouth Hooker Gaff Cutter

Built in Looe in 1896 as a Plymouth Hooker, she was a long line fishing boat with the number PH339.  She was originally a half deck boat and would have fished the coastal waters around Plymouth.

Having been crushed by a ferry in the 1970’s, she underwent an extensive rebuild.  After this she was bought by John Raymond-Barker of RB Boatbuilding in Bristol.  He changed much of the planking and then sailed her across the Atlantic and back.

Bought by the present owner in 2005, she was in a bad state and soon after the purchase the boat was given to Ashley Butler of Butler and Co for a comprehensive refit which was undertaken in 2006.  A new lead keel was fitted with new floors, keel bolts and a greenheart keelson.  A number of frames were replaced as well as a complete new deck structure and new rig.  The interior was fitted in 2007 after the bulk of the main refit had been completed.  The work included a new coachroof, full width to create a raised deck in the middle of the yacht.  This increases the interior volume enormously without detracting from the outward appearance of the yacht.

A lovely looking working boat in good sound condition with a well documented refit history.  She has been lived aboard by the present owner and cruised extensively around the south coast, Channel Islands and France.  She is a nice size of boat, easily handled but not cramped below decks and with good headroom.

Full width coachroof with iroko coamings and straight laid iroko coachroof  deck.  The coachroof deck is at the same level as the top of the bulwark, giving a lot of volume below decks without detracting from the outward appearance.  Bronze portholes and deck lights from Davey.
