Ashton and Kilner Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this Ashton and Kilner Gaff Cutter

26′ gaff cutter built in 1905 by Ashton and Kilner of Poole as a cruising yacht.  Assumed to have been designed in house at the yard.

This is a yacht that feels far bigger than her dimensions suggest and needs to be seen to be appreciated.

Bought by the present owners in 1983 and cruised extensively around the English Channel with several significant refit periods in that time including lots of new planking, a new stem, new iroko floors, rebuilt cockpit, new interior, complete new rig and a replacement engine.  She has proved to be a good passage maker, a notable run being Famlouth to Yarmouth, IOW in 26 hours.

Her history is very well documented from her early years, the second owner Henry R. Carson and his sister Beryl cruised from the UK to Copenhagen and on to Kronstadt in Russia in the years preceding the First World War and won several awards from the Cruising Association and the Royal Cruising Club with their detailed logs from the voyage.  After the War they sailed her through the canals of Europe to the Mediterannean and back via the Canal du Midi and the Bay of Biscay.

Her sailing qualities and prowess as a sea boat have been the key to her survival with each owner realising what a lovely yacht she is and plying her with care and good quality maintenance.  Although not a huge boat by length on deck, she has the feeling of a much bigger yacht and is as solid and safe a cruising boat as anyone could wish for.

“She has about her the unmistakable air of a capable cruiser” – Extract from an early Yachting Monthly article about the yacht.

Teal One Design Keel Boat

Wooden Ships Comments on this Teal One Design Keel Boat

Teal Class One Design built by E. Williams of Cowes in 1936 to a design by A.R. Luke.

9 yachts to the Teal Class design are known to have been built with possibly only 5 yachts remaining.  This example is certainly the best example around and is very original in many ways.  This one design racing boat has the most exquisite lines with one yacht winning the Round the Island Race in 1935 and this very boat, then named Britt, winning in 1936.

Over the last 12 years the boat has undergone a steady but detailed rebuild by the present owner, starting with the fundamental structure and working through the hull bit by bit.  The rebuild is now nearly complete with minor jobs and cosmetic work left to complete.  She is now at a stage where a new owner could customise the yacht to suit their particular needs, be that racing or cruising.

One of the most elegant designs of keel boat to be found afloat, currently very near the end of a detailed refit and ready for a new owner to finish off and enjoy.

Advertised at this very low price at the request of the owner who has thoroughly enjoyed the refit process and simply wants her to go to a new home where she can be finished and enjoyed.  All funds received from the sale will be donated to the Tectona Trust sailing charity.

32′ Gaff Cutter

Wooden Ships Comments on this 32′ Gaff Cutter

32’ gaff cutter built in 1987 by David Patient to a design by Alan F. Hill.

Having been laid up for several years, she was purchased by the current professional shipwright owner and given a thorough cosmetic refit and numerous small repairs.  A second hand Volvo engine has been installed, a keel bolt removed in October 2022 for checking and an insurance survey carried out in 2022.

This is an unusual boat in that she has sleek yacht like lines but with a gaff rig.  The yacht is very spacious below decks with her generous beam giving a nice interior space.  The interior is quite basic and could be improved to make better use of the space but is quite useable as it is with 5 berths, heads and galley.

Externally she is very smart and the boat could be launched right away.  She has the potential to be a superb and capable cruising boat and is an interesting yacht indeed.

The asking price is for the boat launched and rigged, however negotiation on the price is possible to buy her as is in the shed.

Buchanan Viking Bermudan Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Buchanan Viking Bermudan Sloop

Designed by Alan Buchanan and built by William Wyatt Ltd, Mersea, Essex in 1964 to Lloyds 100A1.

The design is known as a Viking, a sturdy and safe cruising yacht with good performance and a sensible size.  At 32’ she is not too large and difficult to handle, but large enough so as to have good headroom and internal space for comfortable cruising.

Bought by the previous owner in 2021, lots of work has been undertaken, mainly replacing the plywood subdeck around the covering boards each side and a complete re-caulk of the teak deck. Back on the market having been sold very recently, the new owner finding he is not in a position to own and sail a yacht of this size.

Deben Cherub

Wooden Ships comments on this Deben Cherub

Deben Cherub sailing yacht, the 6th yacht built out of 17 in total, launched in 1931 at Eversons & Sons of Woodbridge where every example of this class was built.  In the original adverts for the class the price for a new boat was £160 or £200 for one with a Stuart Turner inboard engine.

Rebuilt at the same yard, now called The Woodbridge Boat Yard, in 2020 and currently under the care of the yard awaiting a new owner.

The Deben Cherub was designed and built at Eversons & Sons for competitive class racing on the River Deben.  17 boats were built in total, the first called Cherub, between 1924 and 1937 and were raced successfully in the confines of the river for many years, competing for the Cherub Cup every season.

There are now 5 boats back in Woodbridge and in sailing trim, 2 others await restoration, so a resurgence of the 20th century racing has been seen, and it is hoped with high quality examples such as this one the fleet will attract more people and the numbers will grow in what is an active and friendly sailing fleet of classic yachts.

In order to get the maximum volume for their short length, the hull shape is very full, but with their jaunty sheer line and short counter they look very pretty while still being practical.

This yacht was bought by the present owner in 2019 and taken to The Woodbridge Boat Yard for a major refit which was completed in 2020.  The yard was given recognition for a previous refit of another Cherub, Ariel, which won the prize for Classic Boat Restoration of the Year in her size category in 2020.  The hull was repaired as necessary, deck structure was replaced entirely, a new interior fitted along with a new inboard engine.  According to the yard she is the ‘finest example of a Deben cherub anywhere’ which is high praise indeed.  She has plenty of history with her along with all refit invoices going back to 1997 and extensive ownership records.

John Alden Challenger Yawl

Wooden Ships Comments on this John Alden Challenger Yawl

John Alden Challenger Yawl designed by John G. Alden & Co Inc.  The hull and decks were moulded by Halmatic Ltd, Portsmouth then fitted out by Field Aircraft Services, Loughborough in 1962.

Built to Lloyds 100A1 standard.

This 38′ bermudan yawl design is noticeably American with greater beam and shallower draft than many comparable UK designs of the time.  The benefit of this was to give the same interior volume and the same waterline length but for less overall length, making the vessel easier to handle and reducing running costs.

Purchased by the current owners father in 1999 and given a thorough refit, finishing in 2006.  This period of work saw an overhaul of the interior, new rig and all new systems.  In 2015 the hull and decks were refurbished by Berthons where the varnish work was renewed and the topsides re-painted using Awlgrip paint.

These attractive boats offer a lot of comfortable interior space and a large cockpit, easily handled by a small crew, or even single handed, and this yacht has been well maintained and upgraded over the years.

Maurice Griffiths Sloop

32’ Bermudan sloop designed by Maurice Griffiths as his own yacht.  Built by Seacraft and Co. Ltd in 1956.

This yacht has a beautifully detailed history including photo negatives from the build, Bills of Sale and registration papers going back many years and original letters from Maurice Griffiths to subsequent owners.

Bought by the current owner in 1998, she had been neglected and was in a poor state needing a major refit.  With the help of Tim Gilmore in Emsworth the keel bolts were replaced, the interior taken out and the hull cleaned back to bare wood inside and out.  She was re-fastened where necessary, re-caulked and a complete new deck and cockpit fitted.  All systems were renewed and the interior rebuilt to suit the new owners needs.

This work was completed around 2003 and she has been lived aboard ever since, sailing around the Solent area in the early days but has not been out to sea now for a number of years.  She is well protected under her excellent all over cover and is maintained annually to keep the boat in good general condition.

Full documentation of the rebuild is available and all original documents pertaining to her history will stay with the yacht.

Hillyard 9 Ton Bermudan Sloop

Wooden Ships Comments on this Hillyard 9 Ton Bermudan Sloop

32’ Bermudan sloop 9 ton Hillyard designed and built by Hillyards of Littlehampton in 1968.

Bought by the current owner in 2010, she had been laid up for several years and the current owner undertook a years thorough refit with a professional shipwright on the Isle of Wight.  The ballast keel was dropped off, part of the wooden keel replaced and all new keel bolts.  The hull was stripped to bare wood, 3 planks per side replaced, completely re-caulked and re-fastened where necessary.  The mast was rebuilt with new wiring and new rigging.

Most recently in 2021 she had a professional cosmetic refit, halyards replaced and Baby Blake sea toilet refitted.

Several areas of damage have been discovered which will require repair work this spring and the boat has been price at an attractive level in accordance with this work.  the forward cabin coaming has significant areas of rot, the chain plates are corroded and the top of the stern post is soft which in turn has led to a small area of soft deck plywood and some areas of soft in the hood ends of the top 2 planks.  None of this will stop a new owner sailing the boat away as she is, there is much of this boat which is in excellent order so with these small repairs done she will be a fine yacht.

A nice example of the design with a thorough refit history from the present ownership.  Sensibly priced yacht perfect for family cruising

Sparkman and Stephens 8 meter Cruiser Racer

Sparkman and Stephens 40ft 1965 Cruiser Racer Yacht For Sale

Wooden Ships Comments on this Bermudan sloop classic yacht

40ft Bermudan sloop rigged yacht designed by Sparkman and Stephens to the International Cruiser Racer 8 meter rule.  Built by McGruer and Co. Ltd to Lloyds 100A1 in 1965.

McGruer were known for their run of ‘Cruiser Racer 8m’ yachts, a popular design that offered a fast and easily handled cruising yacht capable of club racing at weekends.  The commissioning owner of this yacht was an industrialist from Glasgow and approached Sparkman and Stephens to design him a yacht to the International Cruiser Racer 8m rule.  He then asked McGruer to build the yacht and the result is a superb vessel of top-quality construction with arguably prettier lines than McGruers own CR8m yachts.

Her construction is a composite design using galvanised frames interspersed between steamed oak timbers.  In the previous 30 year ownership, the yacht was subjected to a rigorous maintenance program including complete refastening of the galvanised frames with stainless bolts, each one insulated from the frames to avoid electrolysis.  She is now in excellent condition and very original with only a few alterations to bring her up to date.

Bought by the current owner in 2021, she is sadly offered for sale due to family circumstances.  A comprehensive 2021 survey is available to potential purchasers.  This is a very beautiful classic yacht in good condition, ready for next season to go cruising or racing.

West Solent One Design

Wooden Ships Comments on this West Solent One Design

West Solent One Design designed and built by the Berthon Boat Co. Ltd in 1927.

Yacht No. W22.

This 35′ bermudan sloop class was designed by H. Jacobs and H.G. May of Berthons as a cost effective cruiser racer for the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.  At the time a new W class could be bought for £600, a similar 6 meter yacht would have cost £1500 so they were well received.  A total of 32 boats were built for the UK market, 5 built and shipped to Argentina and one built under licence in Bombay.  The design was adopted by the Royal Burnham Yacht Club where it was known as the Royal Burnham Restricted Class.

The WSOD, also known as the W class, has seen a huge resurgence in recent years with a number of original boats given professional rebuilds, as well as one or two new examples being built.  They are superb boats with exceptionally beautiful lines and have proven to be excellent classic regatta boats that only need a small crew and are still very competitive.

This is a very cost effective boat with which to take part in the big classic regattas and race amongst the finest classic yachts in the world while possibly having even more fun than those owners.

Underwent a refit by the Cantiere Navale Dell’Argentario in Italy, a yard known for working one some of the finest classic yachts in the Mediterranean.  The refit included a complete new deck and full cosmetic job to get her ready for the Med classic regatta circuit.  The previous owner undertook major structural repairs between 2010 and 2015 with a new mast, new structural floors and mast step and new keel bolts.

A very fine looking yacht that has competed successfully in classic regattas over the last few years.
