Classic Rowing Tender

Wooden Ships Comments on this Classic Rowing Tender

Built in 1910 by Robertsons and Sons Ltd of Sandbank, Scotland as a rowing gig for the steam yacht Ariana.  She was a twin engine steam yacht of some 170’, built for a Mr George A. Clark Hutchison, an MP who lived in Edinburgh.

This tender was known as the Ladies gig aboard the ship.  It was seldom used and put into storage in the late 1930’s meaning it did not stay with Ariana when she changed hands in 1938.  It is understood the gig has been in storage for most of the time since 1939.

She is completely original, as she was built in 1910 and due to the very small amount of use she has had is in remarkable condition. This is a very rare and special boat, a piece of very well preserved maritime history and as such deserves a caring home.

16′ Clinker Motor Launch

Wooden Ships Comments on this 16′ Clinker Motor Launch

Believed to have been built as a ships boat for a Lowestoft Fishing Trawler, she was originally just a heavy duty rowing boat and had an engine fitted at some stage in the past.  She is a very pretty little boat with a beautiful sheer line and slips effortlessly through the water.

Refitted by the present professional owners, work completed in 2020.  The hull was rebuilt with a new transom, new aft deck, new capping rails and the interior fitted out with new thwarts and cockpit sole boards.  A reconditioned Beta 10hp diesel was fitted with a newly built engine box.  The hull was stripped to bare wood inside and out with all new paint system top to bottom.

She is a very elegant, smart and ready to go launch with a road trailer.  Her size is perfect, not too small but not too large, capable of taking family and friends on picnic cruises around the river but also able to undertake local coastal passages.

Clinker Dinghy Refit Project

Wooden Ships Comments

Clinker dinghy built by JJ Bickford of Topsham, Devon in the 1960’s.

At first glance it looks as though she would have had a rig, however she was clearly designed as a rowing boat able to carry an outboard.  The small foredeck gives some dry sheltered space for belongings and she has enough seating for 6 people.

She is small enough that she can be easily launched and retrieved and will fit in a standard garage, however the generous beam means she has a lot of space and stability for a boat of her size.

She is currently in need of a refit and would suit an enthusiastic amateur.  The planking and frames are all in reasonable condition but the gunnels and foredeck are poor.

Length                  12’10”

Beam                    5’2″

Construction

Clinker planked in mahogany all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

Mahogany transom and thwarts.

Francois Vivier Mizainier

Wooden Ships Comments on this Francois Vivier Mizainier

Designed by Francois Vivier inspired by the traditional Breton fishing boats. Francois Vivier is a popular French designed of traditional yachts as well as a respected historian and collector of traditional boat designs.

Built by Devon boat builder, John Moody of Traditional Sail in 1993. John had previously built a number of Francois Vivier Aber designs, 16’ edge-glued, centre-board, lug-rigged sail and oar boats and wanted something larger for the family.

The Mizainier has a steeply raked transom stern, marked drag on the keel with a deep heel, forward raked straight stem and a transom hung rudder.

She is an open boat with a brandy glass midships section giving her great hull form stability. She is ballasted internally with sand bags.

Sold by Wooden Ships to the current owner in 2014, she has been based in Cornwall and used for family sailing ever since.  Kept ashore each winter, her workmanlike finish is very fitting for the type of boat and also easy to maintain.  She comes with a double axle road trailer with an integral launching trolley and has an all up towing weight of approximately 2 tons.

She is always a great attraction wherever she goes being such an unusual design, believed to be the only Mizainier in UK waters.  Sold recently by Wooden Ships but now back on the market as the owner has bought a bigger yacht.

Known as a Plymouth Waterman’s Boat she was built by Blagdons of Plymouth in the 1950’s and is believed to have worked on Naval duties in Plymouth.

18′ motor launch

Wooden Ships Comments on this 18′ motor launch

Clinker motor launch built by Hinks of Appledore in 1990.  She has worked as a passenger ferry most of her life but is now in need of a refit.

The majority of the hull appears sound and she has a good engine.  The boat was afloat and in use until July this year.

She is a very substantial boat, wide in the beam making her very stable.  She would make an ideal passenger ferry or work boat, but with some refinement would be a lovely family launch.

Currently on a road trailer, not included in the sale, but can be used to transport her wherever she needs to be

Andrew Wolstenholme Coot

Wooden Ships Comments on this Andrew Wolstenholme Coot

Known as a Coot, designed by Andrew Wolstenholme and built by the first owner in 2015.  Evidently a very well built boat by an enthusiastic and skilled amateur.

The Coot has a very pretty clinker hull of traditional appearance with a near-vertical stem filling out amidships to firm, round bilges before tucking up to a sweet little transom.  The Cat rig balances beautifully for very enjoyable single handed sailing, however there is enough space, stability and buoyancy to carry crew.

She has 2 rowing positions and due to the placing of the mast, the bow rower can work the oars with the mast still in place, a small feature making this a very practical family boat for messing about on the water.

Complete with a heavy duty cover and combination piggy back road trailer and launching trolley, this is a complete package in tidy condition and ready to tow away.
