Naval Clinker Rowing Boat

RNSA Sailing Dinghy

Wooden Ships Comments on this RNSA Sailing Dinghy

RNSA 14 sailing dinghy in superb condition having been given a very thorough refit for the late owner by Peter Freebody and Co. on the Thames.

This major refit was commissioned by the late owner and work was completed in December 2013, with minor finishing jobs done at Robertsons Boatyard, Suffolk in 2016. A full condition survey was carried out in July 2016, a copy of this is available.  The boat has been used very little since and stored in a dry dark garage for most of the intervening years.

The RNSA dinghy was designed for the Royal Navy to teach sailing to the cadets with some carried on larger war ships.  The design was a huge success and many examples were built for the domestic market by various yards around the country as they were such stable, safe and easy to sail dinghies.

This dinghy is an ex navy example and has a War Department Registered No. SDY/852002

There is unlikely to be a better example on the market than this little boat.  All invoices from the work carried out are available along with the 2016 survey report.

Stroma Yole

Wooden Ships Comments on this Stroma Yole

Built by Banks Brothers in Harrow on the north Scottish coast in 1904.

Registered in Wick in 1912 with the registration number WK378.  She was built for a group of owners on Stroma, David Sinclair, Hugh Simpson, James Robertson, Matthew Dundas and Sinclair Bremner.  All were crofters on the island of Stroma who required a boat to transport their livestock to and from the mainland across the notoriously rough Pentland Firth.

Rebuilt in the 1970’s and sailed extensively around the Summer Isles and Caledonian Canal, to Cromarty and Nairn on the Moray Firth and to the Portsoy Boat Festival.

The vessel recently was found taking on water and lifted ashore for safety.  The engine had water around it at that time but has since been proven to be in running condition and evidently did not get water inside the engine.

Length on Deck                 25’

Beam                                    9’2”

Draft                                      2’8”

Construction

Clinker planked in larch oak frames, all copper fastened.

Straight laid deck of pine with a small toe rail mounted on the heads of the frames that protrude through the cover board.

Two separate cockpits with painted coamings.  The aft cockpit is for the helmsman with a thwart either side.  The forward cockpit is larger for crew or cargo.

Rig

Standing lug rig on an unstayed mast, stepped through the foredeck onto the keel.

Single lug sail in heavy tan material.

Machinery

Beta Marine 36hp BD1005 4cyl diesel.  Recently run up and checked.

Whitby Coble

Wooden Ships Comments on this Whitby Coble

Whitby Coble built in 1964 by Clarksons Boatyard.

A typical east coast fishing boat design, used for centuries to fish in the coastal waters of the east coast.  Usually launched and recovered from the beach, they are tough stable boats with bluff bows to ride the swells.

Bought by the present owner 18 months ago and not used since, the boat was refitted and the engine overhauled by the previous owner in 2020.  She is sitting on a double axle road trailer which is in rough condition but appears sound.

Length                  19’

Construction

Clinker planked in larch all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

A very flat bilge, the steamed timbers stretch from one gunwhale to the other across the centreline in a single piece of timber tying the hull together.

Plywood sole boards in sections.

Machinery

Lister single cylinder air cooled SR1 diesel engine, refurbished in 2020 with very few hours since.
