Chamberlain Dory Rowing Skiff

Wooden Ships Comments on this Chamberlain Dory Rowing Skiff

Professionally built in 2020 to the lines of a Chamberlain Dory Skiff from John Gardner, as seen in his book Building Classic Small Craft.

The builder stretched the length slightly to gain more leg room for rowing but kept the same beam to create a slippery rowing boat that is still nice and stable.

Professional quality build and finish, she has recently had a fresh paint and varnish job so she is ready for her new owners.  Comes with a launching trolley.

Length                  15’

Beam                    4’

Construction

Bottom strake is 16mm plywood for added strength.

Strakes are glued using SP epoxy resin and bronze ring nails where required.

Laminated Douglas fir stem and frames.  Only 3 frames per side, fastened with A4 stainless screws.

Edgar Cove Salcombe Yawl

Wooden Ships Comments

Salcombe yawl No. Y48, built by Edgar Cove of Salcombe in 1966.

Bought by the late owner in 2015 who started a thorough refit, sadly left unfinished after he passed away.

The deck and transom were replaced, some new oak ribs fitted and the hull varnished inside and out with 2 pack Awlgrip varnish.  The rig is nearly complete with masts and very good sails, but requires booms for mizzen and main and new rigging.

The boat is sitting on a good launching trolley but does not have a road trailer.

The Salcombe Yawl fleet is still very active in Salcombe with boats from all eras racing on a regular basis.  This boat does not have a measurement certificate but could be brought into class for racing if required.  She could also make a fun and capable dinghy for family sailing.

One of our classic yachts for sale, the boat is being sold by the late owners family who wish to find a good home hence the very attractive price.

Work left to do includes:

New antifoul

Fix new thwarts in the cockpit and on the side decks

Clean up centreboard

Fit rudder

New running and standing rigging

New main and mizzen booms

Construction

Clinker planked in mahogany, copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

Many oak timbers replaced either entirely or in part.

Iron centreplate which needs cleaning up and re-painting.  Bronze winch to raise the plate.

New varnished mahogany transom

New marine plywood deck laid using Tiger Elite plywood with mahogany rubbing strakes.

Deck, caomings and rubbing strakes all new.  Deck beams repaired as necessary.

New varnished mahogany thwarts made but not fitted.

Rig

Bermudan yawl rig on keel stepped wooden masts.

Both main mast and mizzen are with the boat and have been stripped and re-varnished.

No booms for main or mizzen.

Standing rigging and running rigging not complete and will both need replacing.

Original bowsprit stripped and re-varnished.

Set of little used sails from another Salcombe Yawl, made by North Sails.

12′ Clinker Rowing Boat

Wooden Ships Comments on this 12′ Clinker Rowing Boat

Clinker rowing dinghy that has been substantially built, possibly a barge boat or similar but almost certainly built as a working boat.

Generous beam making her very stable.

This is a project that would suit an enthusiastic amateur for a winter project.  There are some areas of soft in the planking around the hood ends and some soft in the stem.  We have not be able to ascertain the full extent of the repairs required so any buyer will need to inspect the boat in detail themselves to understand exactly what is required to make her seaworthy.

Length                  12’3”

Beam                    5’

Construction

Clinker planked hull, copper rivet fastened to steam bent timbers.

Heavy mahogany gunwhale all round.

Two thwarts with heavy hanging knees.

Solid sole boards.

Uffa Fox Jolly Boat

Wooden Ships Comments on this Uffa Fox Jolly Boat

The Jolly Boat was designed by Uffa Fox, reportedly when he realised he was ‘getting a bit thick aft’ and wanted a performance boat with more space that was also able to carry four or five adults for a picnic.

The design was very successful and built in large numbers by Fairey Marine in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  This example was built in 1955.

The Jolly boat held a sailing speed record with 3 timed runs over a set distance averaging 17.8 knots.

The modern construction methods allowed for a lightweight and rigid hull, with built in buoyancy tanks that allowed them to reach these record breaking speeds.

This boat had a major refit around 2010 with new decks, new centre thwarts and centreboard box and new transom.  She has not been sailed since the refit.  There are some small jobs to do in order to make her ready for sailing.

She comes with a road trailer and piggy back launching trolley.

Rowing Tender

Wooden Ships Comments on this Rowing Tender

Clinker rowing dinghy believed built as a tender to an East Coast fishing boat called Doris, she has the name DORIS LO20 carved into her transom.  It is possible the dinghy dates from 1907 but this is not confirmed.

Found by the present owner sunk in a creek, she was refitted and has been used regularly ever since for rowing on the River Dart and surrounding coastline.  Last year she had 5 new ribs professionally fitted and a section of planking repaired.

This is not an immaculate dinghy but she is good and strong and ready to be used.
