Iain Oughtred Acorn 17′ Rowing Skiff

Wooden Ships Comments on this Iain Oughtred Acorn 17′ Rowing Skiff

Iain Oughtred Acorn rowing skiff built in 2003 by the current owner and a professional carpenter.

Probably a totally unique boat, she is based on the Iain Oughtred Acorn 15 dinghy but extended to 17’ in order to compete in the London Great River Race. This design alteration gives the boat a substantial amount of extra volume and is an interesting upgrade to the standard Acorn design.

The boat has been kept under cover for most of its life and comes complete with two sets of oars and a good quality road trailer. Curlew is in excellent condition and ready to row.

Can be rowed by one or two rowers with or without a cox. A good-looking, seaworthy boat that slips easily through the water.

Camper and Nicholson Launch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Camper and Nicholson Launch

Believed to have been built pre-war by Camper and Nicholson, she does indeed have the appearance of a C&N boat and certainly has the quality of workmanship that is expected of that yard.  She spent time with the Royal London Yacht Club and subsequently many years in Cowes owned by the Port Officer for the Ocean Cruising Club.

Bought by the present owner in 2013 and then professionally refitted, the hull was stripped inside and out, frames replaced as necessary and the outside of the hull sheathed in a very thin cloth to stabilise the timber.  She is now a very smart and well presented launch in very nice condition.

Launches of this size are unusual and highly sought after, large enough to carry several people in comfort and safety but small enough to be launched by one person and easy to handle.

This boat is lavished with original fittings and features, lots of chromed bronze deck fittings have survived the years including a delightful port and starboard navigation light on the bow.  A complete package with a new road trailer, all in lovely condition and ready for the summer.

Length                  14’2″

Beam                    5’1″

Draft                      1’8″

Construction

Tight seamed carvel planked in top quality mahogany, probably a Brazilian or Honduras mahogany.

Copper rivet fastened to closely spaced delicate steamed oak timbers.

The outside of the hull was stripped to bare wood and sheathed in a very light epoxy glass cloth to stabilise the hull and give it a permanent glossy finish.  Finished over the sheathing in 2 pack varnish.

Mahogany sheer strake with a varnished oak rubbing strake and capping rail

Straight laid teak fore and aft decks, varnished, with a varnished mahogany coaming around.

Grating style varnished teak sole boards, raised forward of the engine box.

Varnished teak thwarts with U-shaped seating around the aft end and a bench thwart forward of the engine box.

Transom hung rudder connected with cables to the original bronze wheel mounted on the port gunnel.

Lots of original chromed bronze fittings including navigation lights and deck fittings.

Spray hood over the forward end with a laminated wooden frame and chromed bronze fittings.

Machinery

Stuart Turner 4.5hp twin cylinder sea water cooled petrol engine fitted in a varnished mahogany engine box.

Bronze shaft to a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller gives 5 knots.

Engine controls mounted on the port side next to the helm position.

Electric start with a dynastart system and a single 12 volt battery.  Hand start option.

Percy Mitchell Open Motor Launch

18′ Open motor launch thought to have been built by Percy Mitchell in the 1950’s or 1960’s although the exact history is not known.

A thorough professional refit completed in 2022, the hull was stripped to bare wood inside and out, new oak gunwhales, new thwarts and sole boards, second hand 25hp Nanni diesel, new engine box, battery and fuel tank.  The boat comes with a galvanised road trailer that is in road going condition.

This is an attractive and spacious launch that is now in excellent condition with a good engine and looking generally very smart.

Edgar Cove Sailing Dinghy

Wooden Ships Comments on this Edgar Cove Sailing Dinghy

14’ clinker dinghy believed to have been built by Edgar Cove in Salcombe, possibly in the 1950’s or 1960’s.

It is possible this boat was built to the lines of the RNSA 14 as a number of these were built by Coves over the years.

Bought by the late owner a few years ago and he started a thorough refit which included a new foredeck, some new ribs and a complete strip down and re-varnish inside and out.

The following work is required to finish the project:

Fix new thwarts

Complete new centreboard casing and fix centreboard winch

New rigging

Refit/replace boom

Fit bronze work on bow and deck fittings

Obtain new sails

Service trailer

The late owners family wish to find a good home for the boat where the work can be completed and she will be looked after.  She is sitting on a sound road trailer but it will require a service and checking wheels and bearings.

McNulty Longstone Lugsail Dinghy

Wooden Ships Comments on this McNulty Longstone Lugsail Dinghy

Built for the present owner by McNulty Boats, delivered in January 1999.  Used by McNulty at the London Boatshow in 1999 as a telling example of their work.

Top quality construction as would be expected from McNulty, complete with trailer, launching trolley, rig, oars and all over cover, this is a complete package.

Having been stored largely indoors since new with sporadic use the dinghy is in very good order, but the varnish has suffered in places and will need some attention.

A beautiful little boat in great condition.

Iain Oughtred Acorn 15

Wooden Ships Comments on this Iain Oughtred Acorn 15

Iain Oughtred Acorn 15.  The history of this boat is unknown but she was evidently built by a skilled person and has been finished to a nice standard.

The Acorn is an elegant design, sleek and fast under oar.  This type of construction makes for a stiff but lightweight hull requiring minimum levels of maintenance.

The nice feature of the boat is the rig, many Acorns were not built with the rig that was part of the original design.  The boat is a delight to row, either single or double handed especially with the Raid Blades oars with gates.

Nice looking boat in need of some tidying and a little new varnish but otherwise sound and ready to use.  Solid galvanised road trailer with new wheels.

Lugsail Pram Dinghy

Wooden Ships Comments on this Lugsail Pram Dinghy

Lugsail pram dinghy Built by the late owner to a design by George Whisstock of Whisstocks Boatyard, Suffolk.  The build was completed around 2000 and the boat has since been dry stored.

Constructed to what appears to be a very high standard and remains in immaculate condition having never actually been launched or sailed.

The level of detail in the construction is very impressive, there is no plywood used and all knees have been laminated out of alternate layers of dark mahogany and light ash giving a beautiful finish.

The hull construction makes her very stiff and robust, and she will not suffer from drying out and leaking due to the glued composite structure.

Can be easily lifted on to a car roof for transport, would make an excellent tender for a classic yacht as she is robust and does not mind being out of the water.

A beautiful little dinghy in excellent condition.
