Iain Oughtred Guillemot Sailing Dinghy

Wooden Ships Comments on this Iain Oughtred Guillemot Sailing Dinghy

Iain Oughtred Guillemot sailing dinghy, professionally built by Jamie Clay in 2014.

An immaculate and exceptionally pretty sailing dinghy, finished to a very high standard and kept undercover so that she is in really superb condition.  Sadly for sale due to family health issues.

Built from the modern method of glued marine plywood which makes her very light and strong, but also means the hull does not dry out when the boat is ashore, so she can be launched without needing to take up and without leaking.

The Guillemot was designed by Oughtred over 30 years ago and was based on a 19th century ships boat, designed for sail and oar and intended to carry 3 adults comfortably, with the capacity to carry up to 5 adults if needed in the right conditions.

Because of the lightweight construction this is a boat that can be easily launched and retrieved by one person, handles beautifully under sail and oar but has the load carrying capacity to take the whole family out sailing.

She might also make a superb tender to a larger yacht, to be hung in davits as an elegant and classy alternative to a modern inflatable.

Length                 11’6”

Beam                  4’5”

Construction

Clinker planked in Gaboon marine plywood glued with West System epoxy.  This makes for a light and very rigid hull that requires minimal maintenance and does not dry out when ashore.

Varnished Khaya mahogany plywood sheerstrake.

Gunwhales, inwhales and rubbing strakes made from Utile.  2 rowing positions with oak rowlock supports.

Slatted sole boards believed to be Western Red Cedar, all removable so the bilge can be cleaned easily.

Centreplate made Utile, raised and lowered by hand.

Fixed blade rudder made from solid Utile with bronze hangings.

Pair of varnished oars by James Byam-Shaw of Maldon that fit under the thwarts.  Beautiful bronze rowlocks that fit into holes in the thwart when not in use.

Hull paint and varnish is Epifanes 2 pack polyurethane for a low maintenance and durable finish.

Rig

Balanced lug rig on a varnished spruce unstayed mast.  The mast is stepped on the keel and held with a beautiful bronze fitting against the forward thwart making it very simple to step and unstep the mast.

Cedar strip Canadian canoe built to the Prospector design by Selway Fisher.  Built by the current owner in 2021.

A high quality build, finished to a very good standard and in as new condition, she has never been launched.

The Prospector canoe design originated from the types of canoes used by prospectors and trappers in Canada who needed to haul large loads up and down the rivers.  The hull shape is designed to be fast and easily manoeuvred, but also stable with a high volume and load carry capability.

The weight of the canoe is just 31.4kg meaning she can be easily carried by one person.

The hull is constructed from Cedar strip planks with an epoxy glass sheathing inside and out, making her very light, rigid and durable requiring minimal maintenance.

Rowing skiff

Wooden Ships Comments

The design of this pretty skiff is based on a rowing skiff from Oregon and was built in 2019 by a boat builder from Cornwall, James Baker. Constructed and built to a professional standard, in as new condition.  Recently given a complete cosmetic refit, the boat has only ever been launched a few times and is in immaculate condition.

This type of boat would commonly have been a working skiff or as a tender to a larger vessel.  Easily rowed by one or two people, with a design that allows it carry reasonable loads.  This boat has been built in epoxy glued plywood which makes her extremely light, easily lifted on and off a yacht if she is to be used as a tender, but also easy to launch by one person from a trailer.  She could also be lifted and carried on a roof rack if desired.

Yachting World Dayboat

Wooden Ships Comments on this Yachting World Dayboat

Yachting World Dayboat No.668, built at the Lyme Regis Boatbuilding School in 2010.

One of only a handful of newly built wooden YW Dayboats, she has a current measurement certificate allowing her to race with the modern fleet.

She has proved to be competitive with the modern GRP yachts.

She was planked in spruce to save weight, that saving was used to install several ring frames into the hull to increase her stiffness.  The run of the underwater planks has been altered slightly to improve the hydrodynamics and improve performance.

The Yachting World Dayboat has been a very successful design, fast and fun to sail but also a very capable cruising dinghy.  Her forward buoyancy makes her dry in a chop and the foredeck gives good shelter with a spray rail to throw off the green water.

This boat is a complete package with trailer, cover and a full race ready rig.  She has only been afloat a handful of times and is presented in very smart condition ready to go sailing.

Passenger Motor Launch

Wooden Ships Comments

Built by Clifford Adams, now retired Looe boat builder, to work as a commercial vessel out of Looe.  She was built for the current owner who worked her for many years with enormous success.

Her design is very interesting and is typical of many Cornish boats.  She is very full in the bows giving her a lot of buoyancy u forward meaning she does not bury her nose in a sea.  There is a sharp turn to the bilge with relatively flat underwater sections meaning she has shallow draft but is also very stable.

She had a commercial licence through MECAL, this licence lapsed in 2019 and could be re-instated if desired by a new owner.

The engine is in exceptional condition, the owner fitted a new engine every 3 years to ensure reliability and this engine has not done huge hours.  She comes with a superb twin axle road trailer which is ready to tow away.

This is a very attractive and nicely built vessel capable of carrying large groups of people in comfort.  Suitable for estuary cruising or exploring the local coastline in style.

Fowey River Pilot Launch

Wooden Ships Comments on this Fowey River Pilot Launch

Built by Frasers of Mevagissey in 1951 as a pilot lines boat for use out of Fowey in Cornwall.  She was built for the current owners father in law, a local pilot, who used her to run far out to sea to meet incoming cargo vessels and to help with handling heavy lines once coming alongside.

Because of the nature of the work she was built for, she is a stable and sturdy vessel, heavily constructed and excellent at sea.  She is quite shallow in the bows, a feature built into her because of a specific task required of her, she had to run the bows ashore for embarkation at one particular point on the river in Fowey.

After being retired from the pilot service, she went to the harbour master who used her as a general work boat in Fowey, before being acquired by the present owner.

In 2014 she underwent a thorough refit which included some new planking in the bows and back aft on the port side, all new gunwhales and capping rails, new sole boards and an overhauled engine.  Since that time she has been used for pottering around the local coastline and up the river.

A purposeful looking boat in generally good sound condition, with a lot of space to carry plenty of people and a very safe sea boat.
